- Comment on The Doom vs. Optimism Debate | How to reconcile two new reports that seem to tell very different stories about the state of climate change. 1 week ago:
This should be mandatory reading for a large portion of Lemmy users. The number of rampant Doomers and pessimists on here are growing by the day. Whilst understandable, it’s something that requires tackling before Lemmy just becomes one big Collapse subreddit.
- Comment on Migration has failed to drive economic growth, warns report 1 week ago:
No idea why reports are never linked in articles like this, tbh. It only took me a couple of minutes to find: cps.org.uk/…/CPS_TAKING_BACK_CONTROL_PDF.pdf

- Comment on Climate Doom Is Out. ‘Apocalyptic Optimism’ Is In. 3 weeks ago:
Certainly something that more people on Lemmy need to try out. The relentless doomerism is exhausting and achieves nothing.

- Comment on To fight climate change, we need new “political technologies” 4 weeks ago:
To be fair the article argues that we’re not doing enough and there are options that have proved successful in achieving greater improvements. I don’t think it implies we’re ‘doing all we can’ or that we shouldn’t try what we can.
- Comment on Ain't no one around to hate in the basement. Just me and my jug. 5 weeks ago:
Hey, I like Appletinis and I don’t hate myself that much!
- Comment on I wouldn't ever run into this situation because I would never leave my basement 5 weeks ago:
Maybe, maybe not. I mean this isn’t an isolated survey:
cleanenergywire.org/…/global-surveys-show-peoples…
There’s evidence that your political ideology can influence your willingness to adjust your lifestyle in response to climate change, certainly: pewresearch.org/…/in-response-to-climate-change-c…
However, with respect, anecdotal evidence doesn’t trump multiple world-wide surveys, even accounting for deliberate misinformation. .
So, maybe they are all lying as you say, maybe they actually mean it. Lacking in evidence to the contrary, I’m going with the latter.
- Comment on I wouldn't ever run into this situation because I would never leave my basement 5 weeks ago:
Actually, not only are the vast majority of people aware of man made climate change, they also consider it personally important and a government priorty: …yale.edu/…/international-public-opinion-climate-…

- Comment on Brexit’s Lasting Damage Is Looking Inescapable 1 month ago:
This isn’t about shareholders, this is about demonstrating the economic performance of the UK in the lead up to Brexit as it pertains to our current situation. In your previous comment you seemed to be implying that you can’t extrapolate a trend line prior to a recession and I demonstrated that you could because the lead up was measured in years. I’m not arguing that damage from a recession is permanent, I’m arguing that it put us in an already bad place in terms of productivity etc prior to 2020.
- Comment on Brexit’s Lasting Damage Is Looking Inescapable 1 month ago:
It’s not just a ‘run up to a recession’ it’s over 12 years of continuous growth arrested in 2008. I’d argue that’s more than enough data points to extrapolate a trend line. Don’t take my word for it, though. Here’s an example of the ONS doing the same thing: www.ons.gov.uk/visualisations/…/index.html
- Comment on Brexit’s Lasting Damage Is Looking Inescapable 1 month ago:
If you extrapolate out a trend line from pre-2008 to now on the GDP graph you’ll see that the position where we would have been prior to the financial crash is higher than our current position. The same is true on the productivity chart, albeit a lot closer. My point it that we were already in a bad point prior to Brexit.
See, for example, ONS graphs for unemployment: www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabourmarket/…/lms
Or adjusted pay: www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabourmarket/…/lms
That’s all I’m saying. The issue with with placing that blame exclusively at the feet of Brexit a) ignores the inherent difficulty in separating the economic affects of Covid and Brexit and b) shifts blame from decades of economic and political missteps by our government and onto an convenient scapegoat. The whole things a mess, but Brexit cannot be viewed in isolation.
- Comment on Brexit’s Lasting Damage Is Looking Inescapable 1 month ago:
Sure! Here’s the ONS data for GDP: www.ons.gov.uk/economy/…/ukea
Here’s the ONS data for Productivity: www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabourmarket/…/prdy
I was wrong on my dates; however. It’s more like 2008 rather than 2003, so ties in with the financial crisis.
You also miss my point. I’m not arguing whether Brexit did or didn’t affect our economy, I’m pointing out that the data shows we had economic issues long before 2020, and so pointing the finger of blame solely at Brexit is missing the wider picture.
Also, whilst I don’t disagree re. your comments on recovery, it’s worth bearing in mind that Foreign Direct Investment in the UK remains respectably high as of 2022: unctad.org/node/41440
- Comment on Brexit’s Lasting Damage Is Looking Inescapable 1 month ago:
Our GDP per capita and productivity have been underperforming since 2003. There’s more going on here than just Brexit.

- Comment on Brexit ban on EU ID cards ‘disastrous act of economic self-harm’, says tourism boss 1 month ago:
Well said. Brexit happened and now we need to move on. Wallowing in this constant self-flagellation is doing no one any good, and blaming Brexit instead of the incumbent government making all the decisions isn’t helping either.

- Comment on Government's heat pump strategy well behind 600k a year by 2028 target 1 month ago:
One potentially begats the other. If the demand is there then the installer base will follow. That demand is still comparatively low though, which is unlikely to change until the government starts mandating installs. It’s a real Catch 22 - demand is low because quality is wildly varied. Quality is wildly varied because demand is low.
- Comment on Government's heat pump strategy well behind 600k a year by 2028 target 1 month ago:
It’s certainly a fair point. In the UK we have accreditation such as mcscertified.com which provide at least some piece of mind and the government provides a platform to search for certified installer: www.gov.uk/guidance/find-a-heat-pump-installer
- Comment on Government's heat pump strategy well behind 600k a year by 2028 target 1 month ago:
Interesting point. Hadn’t even considered the cumulative noise issue. I imagine heat pumps will get quieter, but initially at leat you’re right, they could be a real issue in terraced properties, for example.

- Comment on Green anger as ministers promise new gas power plants ‘to avoid blackouts’ 2 months ago:
Maybe. Given this governments track record I only believe something is going to happen when it actually does, not when it’s revealed, committed, unveiled pledged or otherwise. We’ll see I guess.
- Comment on Green anger as ministers promise new gas power plants ‘to avoid blackouts’ 2 months ago:
‘The Government did not give any details about when or where the power stations would be built.’
This is the important bit. As frustrating as these ‘commitments’ are there’s no guarantee they’ll even happen.
