So Who Gives A Crap (who I haven’t ordered from in many years, I remember my kids were very little) have just informed me that they’ve had a data breach of full name, phone number, email address, billing/home address and the amount spent in total for the account. Why are these companies keeping details for so long? This is almost as bad as the periodontal clinic that had the same issue a few months back, leaked my details when I hadn’t been a customer of theirs for over 13 years. There has to be a time by which the details of dormant accounts or old accounts are deleted. They shouldn’t be allowed to just keep your details forever when you aren’t engaging their services. I feel like they aren’t being careful enough.

Agree they should delete data after a set time. But it’s just too tempting for companies to keep you on the books, so they can market to you. Also, even if there was a law, I don’t know how it could be enforced unless there was mass auditing, and that’s never gonna happen. I think regular data breaches are just the new normal. Sigh.

Old habits. In the past it would have been on paper in a filing cabinet that hadn’t been opened in a decade.
The problem now is not that data is easier to steal, paper could always be stolen, but that the data is in a form that is easy to exploit.
I don’t know what can be done to protect people.
