Good. I hate sunfish
AlteredEgo@lemmy.ml 1 month ago
Exploding is a quick and probably mostly painless death.
Orcas are such nice and ethical creatures!

The original article said that the sun fish was already dead, and exploding it is probably a way to create bite size pieces for the juvenile orcas.

Thanks. Not sure if that makes it feel more or less gruesome lol

The mola was already dead

Orcas are such assholes, but in the best way possible.

Just to fuck with you all a little. What if they are doing it because its fun to watch it explode?
aeronmelon@lemmy.world 1 month ago
That’s the reason. Dolphins also pick on fish just because it entertains them.
ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 1 month ago
Maybe. There was a orca calf that fed on the exploded bits, while the adults left the small parts for it and only ate the bigger parts.
They made baby food.

I wouldn’t put it past them

Probably. Orcas can behave in quote a human manner sometimes.

Hank Green did a video about Sunfish and apparently they are mostly collagen which is not very nutritious so most things don’t bother eating or hunting them so it’s quite possible the orcas just do it for fun. I think the article speculates that breaking the Sunfish into small pieces might help young orcas to eat it more easily though so it’s a bit unknown I think
