Looks like itâs just some fun target practice for them.

Good. I hate sunfish
AlteredEgo@lemmy.ml âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
Exploding is a quick and probably mostly painless death.
Orcas are such nice and ethical creatures!
I_am_10_squirrels@beehaw.org âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
The original article said that the sun fish was already dead, and exploding it is probably a way to create bite size pieces for the juvenile orcas.
AlteredEgo@lemmy.ml âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
Thanks. Not sure if that makes it feel more or less gruesome lol

The mola was already dead
Confused_Emus@lemmy.dbzer0.com âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
Orcas are such assholes, but in the best way possible.
DeathsEmbrace@lemmy.world âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
Just to fuck with you all a little. What if they are doing it because its fun to watch it explode?
aeronmelon@lemmy.world âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
Thatâs the reason. Dolphins also pick on fish just because it entertains them.
ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
Maybe. There was a orca calf that fed on the exploded bits, while the adults left the small parts for it and only ate the bigger parts.
They made baby food.
Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
I wouldnât put it past them
starlinguk@lemmy.world âš3â© âšweeksâ© ago
Probably. Orcas can behave in quote a human manner sometimes.

Hank Green did a video about Sunfish and apparently they are mostly collagen which is not very nutritious so most things donât bother eating or hunting them so itâs quite possible the orcas just do it for fun. I think the article speculates that breaking the Sunfish into small pieces might help young orcas to eat it more easily though so itâs a bit unknown I think
