The crazy thing is the majority of people who would want this only want to play FIFA, cod, and pubg / fortnite, none of which will run on this because of garbage anticheat. Do those people even know that’ll happen? I foresee a lot of returns.

Those of us who built a PC and run Linux very likely dont support or play those games.

  I don’t think there’s a danger of that person accidentally buying this thing, as you can only buy it from Valve and not Walmart. From a casually overheard conversation on the subway last week, I can tell you that someone who is seemingly “the average NBA 2K player” is pissed off at the upcharge for PS+ just to make his game function in multiplayer, and that guy is aware of the Steam Deck.

  I mean, the Steam Deck can dual boot Steam OS and Windows 11. I have a 2TB USB C SSD that is a full Win11 install.
  
  I expect I could use that same SSD on the Steam Machine.

    This is cool and all and I appreciate the guide! That’ll help someone out in the future.
    
    However everything you mentioned is NOT something a normie would EVER touch. Never. So again I ask who is this for…because nerds like me already built a computer and normies dont want something that can’t play the most popular games. Just my take. Valve will do fine regardless!

  Steve from Gamers nexus already did an analysis and found an equivilent PC costs about that much anyway (unless you want a massive ATX case in your lounge).
  
  Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo can sell their systems below cost and get it back by forcing you through their store… In fact, thats why the XMBC was so harmful to microsoft, because people could buy underpriced hardware and use it as a media centre.
  
  Since this is an unlocked PC (that even runs linux), it has to be sold above cost, or every Cryptobro/AI-bro will buy them and use.
  
  Not all gamers are playing 4K Raytraced games. If you look at the charts: store.steampowered.com/charts/ the most popular games aren’t that intensive.
  
  Also, we can play games we bought 20 years ago. My Wii U games won’t even run on a switch unless I rebuy them (and the joycon’s on the Switch 1 mostly all drift eventually).
  
  All the games I want to play all run fine on my Rog Ally X. So, even a steam machine is sufficient for me.

    Also, I might be wrong, but fairly sure the pricing for this isn’t that dissimilar to what I paid for my NUC 14 Pro+ too at the time.
    
    Also, if I bought the games I have now on Steam on the Playstation store, fairly sure I’d be paying a huge premium

  I think it’s not intended for power users. It’s to bridge the gap between gaming PCs and Consoles.
  
  This should in theory work “out the box” and be able to play often cheaper Steam titles.
  
  It gets people out the walled gardens, which is nice.

Neber really cared about it. After all tjey were very upfront it was just a prebuild linux pc. You can always just load steam os on your pc (with some minor issues that Will propably be fixed ether by valve or some brave soul on github)

Cell phones are weaker, smaller, and cost more than a steam machine.

Steam machine is weaker, smaller, and costs more than a console.

Consoles are weaker, smaller, and cost more than an equivalent pc (at launch at least).

Seems the smaller the device, the weaker it is and the more it costs.

So give me a room sized PC thats nearly free and powers the world’s intelligence. Im sure it’ll run crisis.

    Sure, but you need to compare top notch phones as they still fail to meet the performance of steam machine. Technically I could build a pc from 10 years ago and say its cheaper too, but it would also be disingenuous because your not comparing closest like hardware.
