As a followup to my other post, I started the book Katabasis last night. I downloaded it first, before I had even heard of Piranesi and the cover said it was similar, so I thought that was serendipitous since I was looking to scratch that similar itch.
And wow, is it a badly written book by comparison. This book might be inspired by the plot of Piranesi, but it completely misses with execution. Where Piranesi was stripped back, told you very little and had you infer things from the characters, Katabasis just drops everything in front of you with an omnipotent narrator that just spews exposition at you. I can also see all the tropes in the first chapter; singularly focused protagonist that needs to learn to chill out, enemies to lovers forced buddy situation, ‘naturally gifted’ expert who it turns out things aren’t so easy for, and macguffin plot that won’t be realised by the end because of the inherit flaw of the main character pursuing it.
These differences really stand out after reading Piranesi and Get Shorty previously. This writing breaks all of Elmore Leonard’s rules and is worse for it. Leonard even says his rules are guides and can be broken, but his books are so readable and enjoyable without being overly flashy or feeling dumbed down.
I’ll give Katabasis a bit more of a chance, but I can’t see myself getting through the 800 odd phone screen sized pages of this book compared to the 300 of Piranesi.

After reading tv and movie reddits for a while I can see there would be a readership for that kind of book. There are so many people who really do need and want everything spelled out. You can’t even show people things, they actually need it to be explained verbally.

I was talking to a guy years ago who said reading takes so much mental capacity that he can’t focus on anything else or have hard to read prose. I totally get that, reading doesn’t come naturally to everyone and some people want the book equivalent of an Amazon TV show that explains everything for the people making spaghetti at the same time.

Go to Spotlight or similar Store and buy mould. Buy choc solid bits. Buy flavour liquids if wanted.
Temper choc. Melt about 3/4 of what you want slowly over water in a small pan. (Microwave possible) toss in the last quarter. Pour into mould. Fridge. Pop.

She was a large light coloured ginger cat with darker stripes. She was sitting on her hind legs on the bench holding the wooden spoon with her paw curled stirring a small pot of soup. No clothes.

I had a really good sleep. 😭Six straight hours uninterrupted. I took an allergy tablet before bed and it meant I didn’t get woken up to go pee. ( I have eliminated 95% of dairy in my diet, when I have a little bit it really does effect me badly, everything gets irritated )

I finished the book Piranesi the other day. I saw a trailer for an indie game and comments were saying it looked inspired by the book so I checked it out.
The book is well written, not because the prose is overly flowery or well done, but because it is so straightforward and the language of the characters infers so much. The plot isn’t entirely gripping on its own per say, but more because the whole setup of the book is so stripped back and so minimalist you want to see where it goes and what happens.
In a way it reminded me of the book ‘The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle’ because it’s about a person in a rather elaborate situation, but I didn’t like how Piranesi explained so much. I would have been fine with a bit more detachment from the ‘real world’.
It’s a short and very engaging read. There’s nothing overly triggering in it so it’s a good one for anyone that likes a hint of fantasy in their writing.

So after a solid month and half of severe depression, I am starting to feel a bit better. Have a few more doctor appts coming up to hopefully figure out some things.
Applied for a few jobs yesterday, and already have an interview at a place in Hoppers Crossing on Wednesday. In industry, NOT a call centre lol.
I have crossed all my digits, knocked on all the wood in the home, and trying not to get my hopes to high 😅
