Back in the day the world had The Great Dictator speech speaking the truth. Then came Network with the I am mad as hell. In this era what speech are we going to look back from the future?

Nemik’s manifesto from Andor
Patnou@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Umm what? I think andor is a star trek thing. Sorry im dumb when it come to the stuff.

Do yourself a favour and watch Andor - it’s not just great art, it’s also a call to arms for the current state of the world
theywilleatthestars@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I mean, you could have either looked it up or assumed that people talking about something know more about it than you when you don’t know anything about it.

I’m jumping on the dog pile to tell you to watch Andor. I am NOT a Star Wars guy but I got talked into this one by a friend who knows my general distaste for the franchise.
It’s fantastic, I really have nothing bad to say about it. It’s not campy like Star Wars, it doesn’t feel rushed, and the stakes a lot more visceral.
It’s also extremely relevant in 2026

Most monologues and speeches from Andor:
- Nemik’s manifesto: Talks about liberation and authoritarianism.
- Kino’s speech: I interpreted it as a call for revolution against the ruling class.
- Mothma’s senate speech: Talks about how fascism rises with a loss of an objective reality (in the public consciousness).
Andor’s really a banger! Please consider watching it if you haven’t already.

Love the hypocrisy of Disney dropping this openly anti-authoritarian series while paying their millions in homage to trump.

The only terminal goal that corporations have is to make money. As much of it as possible.
Production of Andor was greenlit with the assumption that investing money in it would result in a positive ROI. Nothing more, nothing less. The same applies to them funding the fascist admin.

Nemik’s manifesto would be my pick, too, mainly because it resonated with me when I was feeling helpless about the world
Tap for spoiler
There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. I know this already. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy. Remember this, Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly throughout the galaxy. There are whole armies, battalions that have no idea that they’ve already enlisted in the cause. Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward. And remember this: the Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear. Remember that. And know this, the day will come when all these skirmishes and battles, these moments of defiance will have flooded the banks of the Empires’s authority and then there will be one too many. One single thing will break the siege. Remember this: Try.

Chernobyl
Episode 5
Spoiler
When the truth offends, we lie and lie until we can no longer remember it is even there. But it is still there. Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth. Sooner or later that debt is paid.

Is 40 years ago really still “this era”?

Colbert’s monologue on “Truthiness” that then led to Mark Carney’s speech on global order and middle powers. The next one will be about the Fall of the US Empire.
It was a slippery slope that some of us knew we were on…

Link? He had many monologues on truthiness.

I’ve tried looking for it in the past, but unfortunately Comedy Central has managed to scrub those old clips from YT.
Now I only have the vague memory of it and impression it left on me.
It was part of the Colbert Report’s “Word of the Day” segment.

this era is going to be a treasure trove of speeches to look back on.

The Matrix when Agent Smith is telling Morpheus that humanity is like a virus.
Nikls94@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I hate this mindset. Humanity is definitely not a virus. There’s so many tribes and small farmers and fishermen who respect nature and live with it in harmony.
Assholes and the super wealthy are the viruses.
Oh and by the way, every organism that’s cells have nuclei are viruses (all multi cell organisms) - there’s evidence that the nucleus is a virus en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viral_eukaryogenesis

It’s more about rewarding sociopath with more power than sane people
CapuccinoCoretto@lemmy.world 1 month ago
It’s a partial truth. It’s what makes villains great. If they didn’t have an ostensibly plausible reason for being evil, villainy looks cheap and painted on. What is Thanos without his half-truth sustainability philosophy and ethics? What is Smith without this speech?

Mostly the wealthy ones.
