plot twist: one time purchase of a year and a half of use before “we are ending support for the product which inexplicably means your license somehow no longer works”

I’ve switched everything I can away from subscriptions, even swapping to pre-paid phone plan. If I could do the same with my Internet or insurance, I absolutely would.
I like not having small-ish amounts of money come out every month. It’s easier to plan for a big chunk once a year. It’s also much easier to see tiny customer-fucking price increases because they represent a greater difference in annual payment over monthly.

Yearly subscriptions are still subscriptions, you know?

Not really an option to not have a phone and insurance, you know?

Just gonna drop this here: https://buyoncesoftware.com
List of buy-once alternatives to subscription software.

Oh no! They have a paid listing option now. Enshittification knows no bounds… 😢

I wonder if they can pay once for it or if it’s subscription

They should audit that site. Adobe is on the front page and there are a few programs that are annual subs, like horse browser. But I’m book marking it anyway because there is some good stuff there despite that.

From the looks of the site, it seems “buy once” refers more to having your software listed .

Depends on what it is I’m purchasing and the cost of the subscription vs the cost of a one time purchase. Also, depends on if it’s a true one time purchase or something along the lines of those “lifetime subscription” one time charges that never seem to actually last z lifetime.

I prefer keeping as much of my income available as possible and then decide when and where to spend it, rather than having most of it tied up in monthly rates. More liquidity=more flexibility

The day has not come that I’ve found a subscription worth the monthly rate. I even pay a bit more for my Internet bill so I can dump its ass on a whim if I like, and I use that daily (hourly). Canada has SUPER predatory telecoms, keeps them honest

Personally I’m partial to one-time donations. There’s lots of projects to go around, and a big one time sum typically has a better value to fees ratio than several smaller payments of the same value.
