There are some, but they don’t seem particularly active https://lemmyverse.net/communities?query=anticonsum
Is there a "buy nothing" community on Lemmy? Or an anti-consumerism comm?

I feel like there’s three types of buy nothing:
-
buy it for life - people looking to reduce consumerism by purchasing high quality, long lasting items that aren’t engineered to have limited lifespans. See lemmy.world/c/buyitforlife@sh.itjust.works
-
second hand trading groups - people who want to reduce consumerism by creating vibrant second hand marketplaces and encouraging selling, trading, and donating of old goods. Lemmy is the wrong format for this, these groups tend to exist in geographically focused platforms like Facebook and Kijiji.
-
true die-hard anti consumerists - want to never buy anything, including any items that are remotely consumable. Hard to find these communities as these people tend to head off grid, and / or self implode.

Buy nothing communities work best in localized areas I think, for practical reasons. Not sure if a general community would work with users all around the world.

Thank you for this. I may make a local one.

As someone else already mentioned, !anticonsumption@slrpnk.net is a good bet, but it’s still not as active as other communities.
I’d suggest also looking into:
- !zerowaste@slrpnk.net / !zerowaste@lemmy.ml / !zerowaste@europe.pub
- !buyitforlife@slrpnk.net / !buyitforlife@sh.itjust.works / !buyitforlife@europe.pub / !buyitforlife@discuss.tchncs.de / !buyitforlife@lemmy.world
- !degrowth@slrpnk.net / !degrowth@feddit.nl / !degrowth@europe.pub
- !fixing@slrpnk.netAs all of those are frequently intertwined with the movements to either buy nothing, or reduce how much you absolutely need to buy in the first place.
For something outside Lemmy, if you haven’t already I’d suggest checking out the group aptly named the Buy Nothing Project, as they’re an incredible resource if you want to find things in your community others are willing to give away, or want an easy way to give away things you no longer need that doesn’t require having a yard sale style table setup or coordinating giveaways through Facebook posts. (*though they do have Facebook groups for different areas for those who don’t want to use their app*)

No, but that sounds really interesting. I’ve long been frustrated by rampant consumerism, and not just that but also by how blatantly companies will shaft consumers on quality, size, functionality… A laundry list of ways to make their products worse because it nets them a tiny saving per product which all adds up to a new megayacht. Nickle and diming bastards!

Probably the piracy community is your best bet
wowwoweowza@lemmy.world 12 hours ago
That’s good and I’m not opposed piracy but buy nothing ideology goes into other areas as well.

There is a frugal community, which is close. If you build a Buy nothing community I’ll join in.
dontsayaword@piefed.social 14 hours ago
I dunno but if you start one I’ll join

This looks promising:

I thought that was r/dig-a-hole-and-die-in-it?
Be sure to put the “free shovel & dirt” post it on the shovel before you disturb the walls of your internment garden… pockets full of seeds, etc.
FFS: This is a 1000% sarcastic comment… no I don’t think it’s funny, etc.
