    Watched some more movies yesterday

    The Superdeep (2020) - 3.5/5 Hobbits

A Russian sci-fi horror about a researcher and a group of soldiers investigating a disease outbreak at Kola Superdeep which, in universe, is the location of a secret Russian lab 12km underground. Suspend disbelief, it’s a fun ride! I thoroughly enjoyed the main protag being a very intelligent woman. She’s a badass. There were times where I was annoyed that they know there’s a disease, she’s an epidemiologist, but doesn’t mask up when she should. However, being very reminiscent of western sci-fi/horror films of the 2000s and 2010s, I just decided it was fun instead, in the same way I love The Core (2003).

    The Endless (2017) - 4.5/5 Hobbits

A very interesting and engaging film about two brothers returning to the “doomsday” cult they escaped 10 years prior and realising that there maybe something more to it. Involving time-wimey weirdness, a very realistic portrayal of two brothers at odds with one another, and the past still lingering. No jumpscares, no gratuitous gore, yet it scared me. I was engaged with the mystery throughout.

    The Cleansing Hour (2019) - 3/5 Hobbits

A group of people stage exorcisms to stream online (on a platform similar to Twitch I think). The “priest” is a phony, with his production crew staging all the effects. Takes a turn when they realise the fake exorcism isn’t actually faked. Touches on a bit of trauma regarding the main two protags, childhood friends, and their time at a Catholic school, but otherwise is just a fun take on exorcism movies, modernised with current day tech. It’s a bit predictable, I called out a few plot points only 15 minutes in, but a silly ride nonetheless.

Love these reviews, thank you!! I love reading about horror movies, but I’m terrible at watching them, too much of a fraidy cat. But I love to read the wikipedia plot and look at pictures, lol.

I’m somewhat picky about what I watch - I don’t like anything that depicts SA or related issues for example.

If you’re interested in “watching” horror films without actually watching them, these are the channels I watch on YouTube (so you won’t see any gore due to YTs terms and conditions):

        • Ryan Hollinger (horror film reviewer)
        • Roanoke Gaming (he studied biology and discusses how horror film diseases could work irl)
        • Foundflix (reviewer who basically gives a detailed rundown of the plot of horror films)

        For games and movies:

        • Mertkaykay (expect videos to be 1-2 hours long as she provides very detailed analyses)
        • Earlybird (similar to Mertkaykay, but discussed predominantly unknown, retro, and Japanese horror games/films)

Basement: tiled, loose dirt bondcrete sprayed, organised. Brewery: de-lead painted, cleaned, new vwnts ordered and hopefully arriving today so we can fit before painting. Need to organise sparky to replace a socket with a four gang and a plumber to disconnect old brewery plumbbng and separate from kitchen.

What i plan to do this weekend will be both fuck and all.

dat feel when your boss hits you up at 4:56 on a friday asking for an update on an issue he has literally been emailed every goddamn step of.

My response was to just forward the last one back to him with reconvene next week bolded. To which of course he wants to know why. I point out the clients are saying that. “but why?” I do not know. fukken ask them. I charge overtime in minimum one hour blocks btw.

The wind isn’t pleasant, but it is very invigorating. It’s been trying to blow my back fence over, it looks like all of the screws attaching the side fence to the back support have come out so the panel was starting to cave in under the wind pressure. It looks like it’s had a previous repair already as there are few extra holes drilled. I’ve managed to get some more screws in (which was challenging with the wind still trying to blow it over) but I suspect they will work their way out too. When I get a day with less wind I’ll put some rivets in, they should do a better job of holding.

I also braved the wind to put the mint into it’s pot - it took the entire 25L bag of potting mix plus half a bag of compost, so it definitely should have room to stretch it’s runners out in there.

I’m having a real case of recency bias with the band Geese. Their new album got recommended to me, I was getting them confused with the band Goose that has also recently put out an album, then they were talked about on a podcast I listen to, then I did listen to them, then I saw they’re playing at the Croxton next year, and now Thornbury Records got the new album in stock.

I’ve been walking around muttering ‘There’s a bomb in my car’ to myself the last couple of days. It’s the sort of song lyric I’d put on Facebook with zero context back in 2009 and get no interactions.

I’m suddenly transported to 2009 where I would in fact post song lyrics without context 👀😂

Anyone know how to (safely) get rid of a phone battery that’s swollen up into a “spicy pillow”?

    !spicypillows@lemmy.world

It’s apparently a fire risk, so it needs some kind of special handling — I don’t want to just drop it in a bin somewhere!

    • Catfish@aussie.zone ⁨2⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

I took my phone to the repair shop in a lunch cooler bag and they dealt with it

Could call your local council, they usually have an e-waste process. Call them to ask about a pillowed battery and if they accept it. If they don’t accept it, they might be able to advise how to dispose of it.

Anecdotally, I’ve heard Battery World accepts them, but again, I’d call ahead to confirm.

So, update after calling the local council:

The council rep said to drop it in their e-waste collection bin, next to the other mobile phones.

I’m not actually sure that is quite safe enough, honestly, but maybe these spicy pillows aren’t as dangerous as I have been led to believe.

What smart watches are you all wearing and would you recommend? I’ve got a Galaxy 4 Classic and while I loved it, it doesn’t track workouts very well and has started to just stop half tracking half way through, even if I’m still moving. Its battery life is also abysmal. Looking for something I can use to track rides, runs and swims.

    • SaneMartigan@aussie.zone ⁨2⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

I try to buy cheap petite smart watches with a metal strap and a magnetic charger. Mostly for step tracking.

I have a Garmin Venu. It’s an old model now but it tracks everything you said and more. It pairs with Garmin Connect which has workouts and challenges on it too. I think they’re up to Venu 4 now.
