Much like I would not download a car I refuse to down load more RAM. If my RAM fills up ROM will have to pick up the slack!

Looks like you hit a size limit for Lemmy’s cache. When a website uses more storage than you’d expect from most websites, you can get prompted to allow websites to grow further.
Safari prompts you after a website uses 1GB of storage. You may see this notification on other web apps as well. You should be able to retract this permission and clear the storage if your phone runs out of storage.
I’m not sure how you’ve managed to get Lemmy to use so much storage, but I can see it happen after a few weeks of browsing.

Maybe they just never restart their phone or close their browser?
fuckwit_mcbumcrumble@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I never restart my phone or close my browser and I’ve never seen that message. Maybe you need to keep one tab open forever for the cache to not clear?

Memes. Lots and lots of memes.

The notice itself isn’t malware, but I’m not sure on the cause. For some reason the Lemmy web client occasionally tries to cache a metric fuckton on iOS Safari (and probably elsewhere but it happens silently), which sounds like something for the devs to look into.
Generally, Lemmy’s 100x better in stability and speed than it was a couple months ago when a bunch of new people started working on it, but before then it was the side project of a handful of people and it showed. EG - The infamous, three-year-old Hexbear instance managed to have the entire picture side of it go down for a couple days because someone uploaded an absurdly large, extremely low quality photo of a North Korean soldier on it. So, there are probably still some issues like that kicking around.

Use an app - Memmy, Mlem, Voyager…too many choices to stick with the pretty weak web UI.
halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Several different alternate web UIs are pre-installed on lemmy.world. You aren’t limites to the default lemmy web UI and don’t need an app if that’s the only reason you’re using one. a.lemmy.world - Alexandrite UI photon.lemmy.world - Photon UI m.lemmy.world - Voyager mobile UI old.lemmy.world - Old reddit UI

Any reason why they didnt set up photon.lemmy.world as p.lemmy.world?

Avelon is my personal favourite
qaz@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I’ve tried all of those and recommend going with Thunder.
scytale@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Seconded for Thunder. Unique UI that stands out among the rest. I also vote newcomers Avelon and Arctic simply because they can embed videos and gifs without having to open the in-app browser, which is still rare with lemmy apps.
Jumper775@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I can second Mlem, it’s open source and great! Had a bit of a rocky start with missing media features and bugs but the last few update have ironed out all my issues with it to the point where I dont even have to think about it and no longer am switching apps to get features I feel are missing.
WarmSoda@lemm.ee 1 year ago
There’s no reason to use anywhere near that much storage browsing Lemmy.
athos77@kbin.social 1 year ago
If they've somehow ended up caching a lot of videos and pictures, I could see it happening. I'd try clearing the cache, see what happens.
EhList@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Hence my question as I have never needed to allocate memory for a website
WarmSoda@lemm.ee 1 year ago
I guess I was low key saying don’t accept it. The other person replied suggesting cheating your cache. Probably your best bet for this.
ilovegodette@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Never downloaded RAM before?
JustZ@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Great question. Looks sketchy to me.
slazer2au@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Thank you for reminding me to clear the 7GB cache Liftoff takes up.
rikonium@discuss.tchncs.de 1 year ago
Probably Lemmy caching a LOT of data on your phone. I don’t think it needs that much, if you look in Safari settings you can see how much is also stored on your phone and from what sites.

I down voted you so your post would be more active. Be more edgy and controversial :)

You know ranking by controversial got removed.

just the tip
Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Sounds like that app wants access to save something to your internal storage. This could be harmless things like favorites or settings, or websites and pictures for faster loading in the future. However, it could also start installing bullshit apps, ads, and other malware.
I would typically lean towards not accepting it, but I would allow it if I was completely certain I could trust the app. Major companies generally don’t want their official apps to destroy their customers phones, but some greedy app developer in his mom’s basement will happily take you for what you’re worth.

Not an iPhone user, but it doesn’t seem like malware.
It looks like iOS is letting you know Sync is using a bunch of storage on your phone, and is asking if it can use more. It’s fine as long your not short on space.
essteeyou@lemmy.world 1 year ago
It’s the browser, not Sync.
Steve@communick.news 1 year ago
Yah I realized that after. Sync is Android only
