This guy was so bad at sailing, it’s astounding.

I mean, he was a victim of the wrath of Poseidon, not that much you can do about that when at sea.
Saledovil@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
Which sort of paints Poseidon as incompetent. You’d imagine that the God of the sea would be able to reliably kill people at sea.

Sounds intentional to have Odysseus suffer and long for home, instead of killing him off quickly. The gods want to be entertained as well.
moakley@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Zeus wouldn’t let him. Odysseus was fated to return home eventually.

599/600 isn’t a terrible performance.
AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
True, that’s a fair point.

Seems to be decent at the sailing part. Navigation doesn’t seem to be even a minor part of his bailiwick
AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Sailing with no navigation skills is a risky endeavour, as he amply demonstrated.

No argument there. I’m very glad to have GPS whenever I’ve been on a boat, but if I absolutely had to, the BSA taught me to use a compass and astrolabe with a current chart.

Looks like the good old “Didn’t took a right at the crossroads and continued forward instead and then kept on insisting ‘I know the way’” driving problem.

That’s… a creative attempt at the traveling salesman problem.
