Ads allow YouTube to be used by billions worldwide
They’re literally giving us more reasons to use an ad blocker.
- Comment on Why do people say things like "I didn't do nothing"? 5 days ago:
As a native speaker of a Slavic language, I hate that it works like this. It makes the language less expressive without providing any benefit.
- Comment on Why do people say things like "I didn't do nothing"? 5 days ago:
And surprisingly, people speaking such languages as well as English can learn that each language works differently and use the correct form. (Speaking from personal experience.)
- Comment on I've noticed a lot of UK job applications use the American MM/DD/YYYY date format and some also say "resume" instead of CV. Does that annoy you if you're British? 1 week ago:
7th Jan 2007 . You’re welcome, now it doesn’t really matter which order you put the DD/MM
But do you write September as Sep, or Sept? I’ve heard that this is also a British/USA thing

Do you also say “six, fifty and two hundred” instead of “two hundred and fifty six”?
- Comment on I am a very liberal person and I have very liberal children, except for one. I'm pretty sure my Gen Z son has been taken in by fascist doctrine. What can I get him for Christmas? 4 weeks ago:
By “fascist” you mean “supports ethnic cleansing”, or “doesn’t agree with me on every single political issue”?
- Comment on How screwed would one be if their email provider shuts down? 5 weeks ago:
Buy your own domain and use it for e-mails (there are many providers that support custom domains). If your provider shuts down, just switch to a different one and keep the same address.
- Comment on Is it really possible to tax the rich? 5 weeks ago:
How dare you come up with a nuanced take on this topic instead of screaming “eat the rich”!

This is not how you demonstrate that you’re on the better side.

Dislike: every post inevitably has someone complaining about capitalism, Trump, police, Musk, …

- Comment on How are scammers getting my email address? 1 month ago:
True. A more reliable way to achieve this is to buy a domain and use addresses in the form websitename@your.domain.

Because immigrant from, say, Islamic countries behave differently than those from, say, Vietnam.
- Comment on Why do phone manufacturers use in-display fingerprint readers instead of fingerprint readers on the power button? 2 months ago:
The unlocking flow is slower. With the fingerprnt scannerb I just put my finger on the screen and go. With face recognition, I have to turn on the screen, wait for it to pick me up, then swipe to unlock.

In what settings is it socially acceptable to talk to strangers?
- Comment on If I have an account on Mastodon.Social, and another account on PieFed.Social are they technically on the same instance, since they're both on .Social? 3 months ago:
.com is for commercial sites (though many sites misuse it). Most Mastodon instances are not commercial.
- Comment on How do people in this day in age become nazis/neonazies sexist or even incels when there is so much knowledge against it? Do they get anything out of being that way? 3 months ago:
There are more straight men who want a partner than women, so someone will be inevitably left out no matter the amount of therapy.

As someone who used to visit incel communities (though I never supported the misogynist views), I think a lot of the appeal comes from the fact that they seem to be the only support groups for lonely men. Why aren’t there any non-toxic ones?
- Comment on Is everyone here leftist? 5 months ago:
I don’t know. I’m mildly lefo by normal standards, a Nazi by Lemmy standards and a communist by conservative standards.
- Comment on Is it just me or do Lemmy communities tend to skew left wing? Why might this be? 6 months ago:
I’d be fine with hating fascists if the word referred to actual fascists and not everyone who even slightly disagrees with you.

Being able to do what you want is a part of private ownership. Some people just like making their code available to everyone.
