One friend had parted ways at the previous town, and the other stayed to help until I told them to leave.
I had plenty of options, but all of them fairly expensive. With nothing else planned for the rest of the day, pushing a motorcycle for a few hours didn’t seem like a bad idea.
- Comment on Accidentally range testing an electric motorcycle, and unexpected kindness 4 days ago:
It doesn’t do regen braking by default. It looks like the previous owner turned it on (custom wiring adaptor needed to access advanced settings), but it’s much less powerful than engine braking. I assume a more expensive motorcycle would do it properly.
I’m used to driving electric cars with a one pedal mode, so I’d love to try much stronger regen. I don’t think it would make a noticeable difference to the range though.

I haven’t been on another motorcycle in a while so its hard to compare.
The label claims 300kg. I really haven’t noticed any difference in weight or balance. The battery is 72V, 110Ah. No idea how much that alone weighs.
It’s roughly equivalent to a 250cc for power, but with a flatter torque curve. The straight line acceleration from a standstill leaves much to be desired. I’m still hoping that’s a software limitation, because electric motors should have a high starting torque.
The handling is fine. I’m still working up my skills from a long break, so I’m not riding anywhere near the limits of the bike. At my skill level it’s easy to throw into corners, and doesn’t lack power coming out of them.
The first few times coming to a stop are disconcerting, but I quickly got used to the 2 handlebar brake levers and no foot brake or gear shifter. Sitting at traffic lights is marginally better (no clutch to hold and no changing to neutral), and accelerating away is as easy as twisting the throttle*.
Regular maintenance is simpler (no carburettor, spark plugs, oil, gears, chain), and my home solar panels have dropped the fuel costs to 0.
I have a long list of minor complaints, but most of them solvable with a little effort. For $4,000 second hand, I really can’t complain.

It’s not a throttle, but I don’t know what else to call it. Maybe accelerator?

I wasn’t really confident when I told them the range and I don’t think anyone actually looked at a map. They were just going from memory and heading in a general direction.
Ultimately it’s my responsibility to know how far I’m going, and to request/negotiate changes to the plan if I need it.
No harm done, and I know what to do next time.

I don’t envy your position.
I’m certain that this new law has nothing to do with protecting children, and only exists to provide a way for AI companies to start making money.

That’s a much better way of phrasing it.
The current “net zero” targets fall a long way short of necessary, but I wasn’t sure of a term for the correct target.
- Comment on Liberal Party formally abandons net zero by 2050 climate target 3 weeks ago:
For this specific case it means net zero carbon emissions into the atmosphere. Plastic isn’t carbon in the atmosphere, so it isn’t included in these figures.
Net zero is just the first step anyway. Once we reach net zero, we still need to work really hard to get to actual zero, then we still need to find a way to be significantly carbon negative if we want to try to slow the worsening rate of climate related disasters.
Hopefully, somewhere in that process, oil products will become non-viable.
- Comment on Liberal Party formally abandons net zero by 2050 climate target 3 weeks ago:
The government has claimed that reaching net zero is impossible.
Meanwhile, South Australia is on track to reach net zero early, and other states are accelerating their uptake of renewable technologies.
This government is not compatible with reality.

I wonder if you’ve ever listened to the part of the safety briefing before every flight where they instruct you to keep the seatbelt fastened throughout the entire flight.
Judging by the number of clicks I hear when the seatbelt light turns off, I’d say most people don’t.
- Comment on How active is too active while being on lemmy? 4 months ago:
Make sure you don’t go for a walk more than once per week or you might get too healthy.
More seriously, I’ve noticed that my mental health is better on days when I’m not on Lemmy. Browsing and participating on its own is not a problem, but mindlessly scrolling all day when other tasks need to be done is. I have a few tricks that occasionally work.
Leave your phone on the other side of the room when you sleep. You’ll have to get out of bed before picking up the phone, so is easier to not start mindlessly scrolling.
Set an end time for Lemmy and pick a different, more relaxing task at least an hour before going to bed. Social media is not conducive to sleep.
Other than that, I haven’t had any issues with people posting too much content. As long as you’re respectful and willing to change if someone complains, you’ll fit in fine here.

You might be thinking of another game. Void Crew is only available on Steam.
- Comment on What should I get my online friend for their birthday? 4 months ago:
As stated by others, their Steam wishlist is always a good starting place.
If they like story games, To The Moon is like a book you wish you could forget so you could read it again for the first time. It’s best played with 0 spoilers.
If they are the type of person who tries to optimise everything and automates a lot on Minecraft, Factorio (a bit expensive) might take over their entire life for a few years.
If they enjoy puzzles and/or you want to play with them, Portal 2 has a co-op section.
I will happily agree with everyone who mentioned Stardew Valley. It can be single or multiplayer, and has a large number of mods. The Expanded and Ridgeside mods add a huge amount of content including trans characters.
Depending on how well you know them, you could try asking if there’s any game they’d like to play together that they don’t have. Having a friend to play with is often better than the game itself.
PULSAR: Lost Colony and Void Crew are mediocre games made fun by forcing interaction with other players (friends or random people in open games). They also have a surprising proportion of LGBTQ+ players. - Comment on AI-generated search result descriptions 4 months ago:

Promising a reward for making the deadline then deciding to move the release date is like promising a reward for anyone who can finish a race in under 10 minutes, then just deciding not to look at the stopwatch for 15 minutes even though people have already finished.
The devs have earned the reward you promised. You’re just refusing to look at the stopwatch so you can pretend they didn’t.

- Comment on Does vibe coding sort of work at all? 5 months ago:
LLMs are great at language problems. If you’re learning the syntax of a new programming language or you’ve forgotten the syntax for a specific feature, LLMs will give you exactly what you want.
I frequently use AI/LLMs when switching languages to quickly get me back up to speed. They’re also adequate at giving you a starting point, or a basic understanding of a library or feature.
The major downfall is if you ask for a solution to a problem. Chances are, it will give you a solution. Often it won’t work at all.
The real problem is when it does work.I was looking for a datatype that could act as a cache (forget the oldest item when adding a new one). I got a beautifully written class with 2 fields and 3 methods.
After poking at the AI for a while, it realized that half the code wasn’t actually needed. After much more prodding, it finally informed me that there was actually an existing datatype (LinkedHashMap) that would do exactly what I wanted.Be aware that AI/LLMs will rarely give you the best solution, and often give you really bad solutions even when an elegant one exists. Use them to learn if you want, but don’t trust them.

If you’re trying to calculate it, then it’s quite difficult.
If you just want to use it in a computer program, most programming languages have it as a constant you can request. You get to pick whether you want single or double precision, but both are atomic (a single instruction) on modern computers.

It sounds like your driving instructor wasn’t any good. A good driving instructor will never put you in a situation that you are not ready for. They never should have allowed you to get a licence until you felt safe.
If you feel like you’re not in control then you’re right - this accident is proof of that. If you want to try driving again, I highly recommend getting a good driving instructor first - one who won’t put you in situations you can’t handle.
If you can get everywhere you need to without driving, then you can save yourself a lot of money by not paying for a car, insurance, or registration.
You always have the right to say no, and you can always say “not now”. Maybe wait a few more weeks before making a decision.
