  I once drove an hour with a pretty severe concussion because I planned to just go home and sleep off what I would later learn was a small crater in the front of my skull. After I got home and was poking at the injury in the bathroom mirror, I realized I could feel pieces of my skull moving around so I decided I should probably go to the hospital…

  The process of getting my skull fixed with extremely shitty insurance was a whole other set of horrors that in some ways sucked even more than the skull crater.

  I’ve said for a long time that the primary means of American education is advertising. He was advertised as a competent businessman on TV, and so that’s what a lot of Americans believe. The guy’s a walking advertisement. A flim-flam man.

  He wins because he’s the best at lying in a country that prizes lying for money as the best skill set one can possess.

  I play video games, but my “identity” as a “gamer” is not important enough to me to care about defending the label.

  If someone says “gamers are trash,” you either know exactly the type of person they’re talking about, or you are the type of person they’re taking about.

  I have no desire to argue “well I’m a gamer and I’m not like those people” because I don’t give a damn about the “sanctity” of such an arbitrary label. Also, not only are there tons of toxic gamers who are guilty of all the -isms, but there are also a lot of gamers who are all-to-eager to minimize the shitty actions of the former group and I don’t want to be associated with them either.

  “That’s just how online gaming is” or “You think that’s bad? You should’ve seen call of duty lobbies back in the day” are common refrains from people who may not be hyper-toxic themselves, but they’re completely adjusted to bigotry being the status quo for the hobby and they don’t even see it as a problem to be corrected.

  Also, I’m white. Seeing people criticize racism in gamer culture and jumping to the defense of the label as if that’s the problem feels very on brand for the way that white people tend to prioritize things. The bigotry is a much bigger problem than my “right” to call myself a gamer without the extra baggage. It feels a bit like still trying to defend twitter. I play video games, but yes, gamers are trash.

  One detail I’m still not fully clear on is how widespread the effects are. Say an instance uses the tesseract frontend. Does that mean that everyone who accesses lemmy via that instance was having all of this filtering applied? Does it only apply if they were accessing it via the web? If they logged into the same instance via a smartphone app, would it still be applying all of the hidden tesseract filters?

  I had a “career” class in highschool where they setup a mock budgeting exercise in the library, and we were supposed to visit the grocery store, pay bills, invest, etc.

  Instead of using our chosen career like every other class exercise, for this one you were just given a card with your life details on it and you had to work with that. I literally took one look at my card and said to myself “this isn’t going to work.” I was a single parent of 3 kids and my income was something like 2k/month. I knew I wouldn’t have enough money to even make it through the entire exercise so I asked my teacher, who created the cards, what I should do. She just pointed me toward the first expense and said “go do that, then do that” like re-explaining the sequence I was supposed to follow without acknowledging that I was going to run out of money in just a few minutes, so that’s what I did.

  I did like 1/4 of the exercise, ran completely out of money, and then stood around for the rest of class while other students decided what they were going to do with their leftover funds. For whatever reason, at the end of the exercise, the teacher asked who ended up with this or that card, and when I pointed out what I’d gotten she was like “yeah that was the worst one” and that was all that was said about it.

  I guess it actually was a pretty good lesson on how America deals with poverty.

  This isn’t exactly the same thing, but Matthew Fox played a paratrooper with no lines in World War Z. This was after Lost, so he wasn’t an unknown by any stretch. He originally had a bigger part, but they changed the entire 3rd act in reshoots and his role was reduced to basically nothing.

  I used to use sync, but it’s been abandoned and I heard from other former sync users that summit had a comparable feature set, so I switched to that. Summit shows profile pics next to each user.

  Nice profile pic. I’ve been wanting to find a maker/tinkerer community on lemmy but I haven’t come across one yet. Am I just not looking hard enough? I love seeing and discussing people’s DIY electronics / 3D printed projects.

  With all these “IT can see when you connect a USB device” comments, I must ask has anyone ever actually worked for an IT department that made you micromanage/snitch on people like that? It all sounds like a bunch of hypothetical scare mongering to me. Granted, I’ve never been company IT for a fortune 500, but I’ve been outsourced IT for dozens and dozens of other companies all across the spectrum, and the notion that we were monitoring USB devices connected to each workstation is laughable. We monitor for the presence of malicious files, files with names like passwords.txt, and suspicious logins to your account. That’s pretty much it. People change mice all the time. I’ve used an arduino-based jiggler on my own work PC.

  Furthermore, and this is the more important detail for myself, I’ve known many many different IT people working at every level and I don’t think I’ve ever met a single one who gives half a shit if employees aren’t being productive. Just don’t break your computer please, and if you do, for the love of God don’t try to fix it yourself. Personally, I’ve never seen any instance of any worker ever trying to circumvent arbitrary productivity metrics with easy workarounds because I’m not a fucking snitch. In IT, we also have bullshit “productivity” targets that are completely decoupled from actual productivity. We get that it’s bullshit. If there’s an IT department out there that’s full of snitches trying to catch workers slacking, that sounds like a genuinely awful place to work.
