Windows 10 LTSC gets updates for a while longer. I forget the exact number, but I wanna say it goes into the 2030s?

I’ve been daily-driving Linux Mint (LMDE 6) on my Thinkpad T14 G1 for almost a year now. At this point, that laptop is easily the most dependable machine I’ve ever had. My gaming PC is the last remaining Windows machine in my house. Recently I’ve been making sure everything is backed up (Syncthing is great for this) and finding alternatives for programs that don’t have a Linux version.

I’ve got four paid-off vehicles (2 cars, 2 motorcycles), and am about to acquire another car (W123 diesel Benz) from my wife’s grandmother who is no longer able to drive.
I don’t care to have any more car payments, and I hope it stays that way for a long time.

I bought my 2008 Toyota Sienna for $4500. I talked him down from $4900.
It had:
- 230k miles (269k now)
- an engine replacement (2010 with 91k miles less than the chassis)
- worn out sliding door rear hinges ($140 apiece), bad enough to be grinding on the body under the 3rd row windows
- broken power steering rack (found that a few weeks later)
- balding tires
- rattle-can patch job (black paint on factory black paint, not a huge deal for me)
- blown out rear shocks
- more that I forgot about (noted down in my records)
I bought that van because 1) it was a really good price, and 2) I knew what most of its issues were before I bought it and was able to fix it up. Also, I have 5 kids, so the minivan was a necessity.
$5000 is basically the bare minimum for a family car these days.

I did this in my younger years and the cars I got always had some hidden fucked up problem.
My minivan is (well, was) like this. The person I bought it from said the roof-mounted DVD player was professionally installed. I got it home, pulled the interior apart (I was installing a new headunit, backup camera, and some other things), and found the “professionally installed” wiring crossed in front of the side curtain airbag. It wasn’t secured anywhere at all, either. Just flopping around. I fixed that up along with some other issues I found.

Yes, let’s ban the single most common form of transportation in the country because you’ve never had to live in an area with zero public transport.
Great line of thinking, there.

I paid %17 interest on a car with a 6 year loan (don’t do that, kids). Refinanced to 4% a year later, knocked another year off the loan (5 years to 4 years), and still ended up paying less per month than the original payment.
I miss that car sometimes. 2012 Kia Soul, and I really liked it. I went on a 3-week business trip a few years ago, and my rental happened to be a 2021 Kia Soul in mustard yellow. I loved every minute of it.

Those have a decent aftermarket though. Spotify at least issued refunds, so there’s that.

Thank you.
And for what it’s worth, the “just following orders” excuse doesn’t hold up in court. In fact, it shows a stark lack of empathy entirely.

I feel you on the “social development” part. I wanna recently diagnosed with ADHD and it helped explain quite a bit about myself. Most men around my age in my area are the stereotypical “sportsball/golf/hunting/jesus” type, none of which I relate to in the slightest, so it’s difficult for me to make friends. I’m very much a homebody and tinkerer, and have at least 3 different projects going at any given time (cars/motorcycles, computers, guitars, hobby kits, etc). What’s frustrating is that people tend to lose interest very quickly once I start talking and getting into detail… I’m lucky that my wife is supportive as she is - without her I’d have nobody to bounce ideas off of 😅

I have a childhood friend who was very recently diagnosed with autism. We talked a little while ago and he brought it up. My first thought was “ah, yep, that explains a lot”.
He’s still a great friend. It didn’t change anything about him, rather it helped make sense of his behaviors that we all just saw as “that’s just how [friend] is”.

My wife and I had fried plantains at a Venezuelan restaurant a couple weeks ago. That shit was absolutely divine with beans, rice, meat, and a fried egg on top.

Hard no. Extremely hard no. This is the kind of crap our parents would make and serve.
For anyone with taste buds, let’s be abundantly clear on something: steaming vegetables is perhaps the WORST way to cook them.
I’m sorry your parents were terrible cooks. Steamed veggies can be very delicious what done right, and it’s not that difficult to do.

Maybe don’t be an asshole by lodging it on a berm behind another car and just walk the extra 20 feet to put your fucking cart in the corral.
- Comment on [deleted] 1 month ago:
I watched someone in a Costco parking lot shove his cart onto one of those berms at the end of a row, very obviously about to walk away from it. I was already frustrated, so I walked over and basically yanked it from him, saying something to the effect of “no don’t worry I’ll get it” in a very “you’re part of the problem” tone.
It felt nice, I’m not gonna lie.

Makes sense. I had a E6440, E7470, and 7490. The E6440 was a beast of a machine, and the E7470 fell off a 14 foot ladder and still survived, despite missing a corner… The NVMe drive was barely holding on 😅

Both my work laptop and personal laptop have mechanical shutters that can only be opened by hand.
They’re both Thinkpads.
