The whole “there are starving children in Africa” just felt like ignoring local problems.
Most nearby schools have kids that can’t afford lunch, a good chunk are even homeless too. There are starving children in your 2 mile area, mom.
But mentioning them also raises the question of “why not campaign and volunteer to solve that issue.” So people rather mention the problems an ocean away.
Also for the record, average upper-class american family could help both groups at the same time by working as extra hard as most people.
