So it’s between your glasses exploding in your face or potentially getting more injured because you disabled a safety feature in your car? Because that makes a lot of sense. I’d be more worried about the fact that you disabled something that could save your life than not being able to see, because at least you can buy new glasses. Your life can’t be replaced.

Are you a chucklefuck, or do you not realize broken glasses will totally explode your eyeballs?
MantisToboggon@lemmy.world 2 days ago
It explodes in your mouth it explodes.
serpineslair@lemmy.world 2 days ago
So you’d rather hit the dash/steering wheel with ur face at 50mph than break ur glasses? Pretty sure they’d explode in ur face regardless. I mean I’ve been punched in the face before whilst wearing glasses. Highly doubt the lenses would shatter in your eye, most likely the frames will snap and they will break around your face. No doubt uncomfortable but less likely to mutilate your face 🤷.

That’s very very stupid, I never heard about anyone getting hurt by the glasses because of the airbag.
using just 10 seconds looking it up, reveals that glasses do not significantly increase risk of eye injury from airbags.
And remember in the context of research significantly means it is not statistically significant, meaning the number is so small it’s within statistical error.
So disabling the airbag that demonstrably saves lives, to avoid a statistically non existent danger, is about as moronic as it gets.over_clox@lemmy.world 2 days ago
You’ve never worn glasses have you?
Them bitches will definitely etch a hole in your face or take out an eyeball…
Buffalox@lemmy.world 2 days ago
I’ve been wearing glasses since I was 12, and I’ve had a car and drivers license for decades.
Why do you keep trusting your own mistaken logic over the statistics? Why don’t you look it up for yourself?
You are the one that sounds like you are not wearing glasses, I’ve never heard anyone using glasses having similar fears you have.
Your fear is paranoid and delusional. Let’s hear it, which eyeball was taken out by the glasses on who?
I’ve been in numerous accidents wearing glasses, on bicycle, kayaking and even a pretty serious one in a car once. I’ve never been hurt by it, I’ve only had to replace the sometimes, which is of course annoying and expensive. And I’ve also never heard about either friends or family or statistics that say there’s an actual problem wearing glasses in accidents.nocturne@slrpnk.net 2 days ago

So… wouldn’t your glasses shatter either way? Your face will most likely slap the steering wheel even while wearing a safety belt (look at a few crash tests without airbags).
over_clox@lemmy.world 2 days ago
I still have both my eyeballs, thank you very much.
Glasses aren’t made of glass these days, they’re made of plastic (polycarbonate), and they just slung off my face for a moment…
slazer2au@lemmy.world 2 days ago
Depends on the impact. Glasses are flexible enough that you should be ok.
Actively disabling a safety feature of your car is a sure way to have your insurance not pay out in the event of an accident.

Injuries from not having an airbag will be far worse than any injury from wearing eyeglasses

Airbags were designed by engineers. You know what all engineers have in common?
They wear glasses. And they’re smart. They thought of this.Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 days ago
Rather my face hit an airbag than the steering wheel itself. 🤷♂️
over_clox@lemmy.world 2 days ago
Been there, done that. I’d rather my face smack the steering wheel, without glasses, and without a Takata airbag…
Seriously, been there, done that.
I don’t trust airbags at all, I’ll just as soon disconnect all of them.

Got a pair of old glasses? You can test this easy at home!
Put your glasses on a large turnip and have it face up. One of those styrofoam mannequin heads is even better, but a turnip would do. Take a piece of flat wood and place it on top. Then gradually add weights on top of this until you get to about 18kg. This simulates the actual pressure of an explosively inflating and then deflating nylon bag, which is what the airbag does. Then remove the pressure and check:
-
Did the nose pads and frames dig into the turnip? How deep? That’s the most likely wound you’re going to get.
-
Did the lenses pop out, and if yes, did they go outwards like they’re actually supposed to? If not, invest in better frames.
-
Are the lenses cracked? That’s extremely unlikely for modern lens, which are 99 times out of 100 made of some kind of plastic (like polycarbonate or tritex).
But hey, save yourself the potential inconvenience of minor airbag lacerations and go for a full headbutt of the steering column, or at the very least the mother of all whiplash traumas!
In modern cars, airbags and safety belts are supposed to work together to protect you in an accident. Disabling one just makes the other a lot less effective. And you don’t have to take my word for it, there’s plenty of crash test data to to peruse on the Internet.

Same, I never wear a seatbelt either. In summer I just take the doors off, it’s so much better to just fly out of the vehicle at 70mph than get trapped! /s
Glasses are special material, and don’t shatter easily. It’s not a cheap water glass. Your risk assessment is inverted.

My ‘glasses’ (what the fuck is that term?) are and have always been plastic.
The airbag never even worked, but I almost lost my right eye due to a fight in school, while wearing plastic lenses.
