    • counter strike (november 2000)
    • paper mario (february)
    • black and white (march)
    • zelda oracle of ages/seasons (may)

    and upcoming games same year:

The “games suck now” people have always existed. The comic is just ridiculing them.

When I was in high school I used to think that PA was really smart because of the lengthy monologuing. Today it just reads like lorem ipsum drivel to me and the punchlines are mostly contrarian edge lord shit.

You just described Tycho/Jerry’s actual personality: “Thinks he’s a lot smarter than he is.”

So they predicted the right wing YouTuber who reviews movies and games and who drinks alcohol on screen. And their entire personality is being a whiny drunk bigoted bitch.

Yep. Either very few people actually reread this strip or their literacy is so low they didn’t realize the whole point of the strip is that “video games suck now” is a brain dead take.

What a coincidence, that is about how long it’s been since Penny Arcade was relevant.

Around this same time would have been the old flash cartoon, “The Decline of Gaming”, which accurately predicted the trend of all genres taking on RPG elements, perhaps even more than they thought possible. I’m not quite sure where this pessimism came from, as we were hot on the heels of all of the mega hits that came out in the late 90s, and everyone was quite aware of imminent releases of the early 2000s at this time, like Super Smash Bros. Melee, Final Fantasy X, and Metroid Prime.

Holy shit, forgot all about that one but just hearing the title took me way back. What a time capsule to look back on.

Maybe some of those accents haven't aged so well though...

Even the characters of PA have aged.

People think things suck in the present because they look to the past and feel things seemed better. Then in the future when things are actually worse, you realize that what was previously the present wasn’t actually that bad because you look at the current state of things and see it’s actually gotten even more shit than before. This is the downward slope of enshitifcation.

Then you forget that everything that got worse was also replaced by something better.
