From a socialist perspective, what are the solutions to doomerism, and that "can't find love" feeling that I've been seeing on Twitter (specifically a frontend)?

Delete your twitter account and never go back.

This is honestly just genuinely good life advice

I think when they said “specifically a frontend” they mean that they don’t have a twitter account and use something like nitter to view posts. The funny thing is that they will have specified this to minimise comments like your one.

      I could be wrong though?

Jokes on you, I’ve already stopped using Twitter full-time in favor of Bluesky back in September 2023.

Yea, tell all your socialist friends to delete theirs too. These are pretty much channels that directly connect and network groups together. Its where ideas are spread and groups organize. What needs to happen is all leftist and socialist need to be run out of those platforms so that the eyes and ears of the right can be given red carpet to spread only their ideas. It’s a great plan.

I know this sounds like a stupid platitude, but the solution to doomerism is to organize. In real life, with living, breathing humans.

Join whatever organization is in active in your community, start attending meetings, find a campaign to plug into, and spend at least a few hours a week doing something positive with other people that want to do something positive. And, after you campaign with them, socialize with them because organizing can be hard but feeling connected to members of your community feels better.

I helped found a mutual aid working group in my DSA chapter; we spend all month taking in donations, and then host a monthly Food Not Bombs-style food and hygienic supply distribution for the unhoused and food insecure. The feeling you get when you actually help improve people’s material conditions is genuinely just the best.

And, yeah, definitely get off Twitter.

Seconded. Also, acknowledging the reality that change is slow.

Some people think burning down the system is the way to go, but rarely talk about what comes after. We have a system currently, albeit shitty af, but changing it will take much less work and time than building one from the ground up. Not to mention the amount of suffering that would be caused by the turmoil that would follow a governmental collapse.

Zohran Mamdani and other Democratic Socialists have proved that it is possible to co-op the Democratic party. Now, it is just a matter of like-minded people putting in the work to organize.

Time will tell if our ability to organize changes, but as of right now we have hope.

What about in the comfort of one’s own bedroom? Also, I stopped using Twitter back in September 2023 in protest to Elon Musk running the site. Needless to say, I prefer Bluesky - a whole lot better there.

If in your bedroom is all you can do, that’s better than nothing, but the ability to effectively organize online only is limited.

Act locally. there has never been more opportunity to do so: ICE watch, mutual aid, community safety groups, union organizing, skill shares…

But what about in the comfort of one’s own bedroom?

actually you can! start or join a skywatch group tracking/identifying DHS aircraft using adsbexchange.com ; do accounting or other logistical planning for a mutual aid group; etc.

Once we stop being alienated from our labor and our communities this will be much less of a problem.

Asking the solution to doomerism is asking the question backward. Doomerism is a rational response to the rich and powerful steering civilization directly into climate catastrophe. Oil companies have known for at least 60 years that they were negatively affecting the climate, but there’s been a bipartisan project to not only shield them from accountability, but to actively empower them to continue the destruction. All of the most powerful state apparatuses in the world serve the same death cult.

If you want to stop doomerism, you should become a green socialist. Tear down the power structures that suppress green alternatives, oppose oil lines, oppose AI data centers, shut down the corporations, the governments, the shills. Stop letting them steer the ship toward destruction.

The solution to that “can’t find love” feeling is more complex, but it’s equally as tied up in the current state of global capitalism. Basically every major government has spent the last fifty years trying to squeeze people as much as possible to the point that everything’s expensive and nothing works. We’re all alienated, we all have various traumas handed down to us by our boomer parents and no real way to heal from them that’s not reliant on others. Our communities have been destroyed over and over again because community stands in the way of capital.

Destroying capitalism probably won’t fix the entrenched ideologies that keep us miserable, but we can’t start trying to fix the entrenched ideologies until we destroy capitalism.

    1. It does not matter if you look at twitter on the official app, a frontend, your neighbour’s door’s peephole, it’s still twitter, it’s still a cesspit, curate your feed better or leave it altogether.

    2. Socialism is an adventist secular religion. It provides no tools to alleviate suffering because it is based on the whole concept that problems will be solved “when the revolution comes” and “when we abolish private property” and so on (see this comment for a perfect example).

If you want to feel better, do what you can to improve your situation now. This means: find a better job, change your habits for better more fulfilling ones, stop doomscrolling social media designed to rot your brain keep you engaged, find a better friend circle if the people around you reinforce these feelings of doom.

The feelings of “can’t find love” have a lot to do with the people you hang out with, or lack thereof if your social media diet takes up enough of your mental energy to impact your feelings.

Go touch grass, find a hobby to do with others, preferably groups of mixed age, background (sex, race, etc), and beliefs.

I’m basically single, and I prefer being optimistic about finding love - the glass is always half-full, after all. And yes, I do touch grass (I take walks sometimes).

change your habits for better more fulfilling ones, stop doomscrolling social media designed to rot your brain keep you engaged How?

      • MolochAlter@lemmy.world ⁨9⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

I assume “how” is referencing the “change your habits” part, because getting off social media is simply a matter of choosing to do so, so I’ll answer accordingly.

Changing habits is not easy, in my experience finding hobbies you like is a great way to get out of your routine which then helps you notice what habits make you less happy since you’re no longer just going with the flow, but YMMV on that.

In general, it takes time and effort to vet your habits.

I’m not a professional, so I don’t have concrete methods other than my own, which is to “test” them: stop doing the thing for a week, assess how you feel afterwards, then go back to it and see if you feel better or worse.

It’s never going to happen. Look at it responses here. Ass backwards. You’re giving the modern printing press and these people say “meet 3 friends locally and drunk craft beers”. They’re invested in an image and lifestyle more than doing what is needed to win. The left is cooked in a modern world. They haven’t lost the ground they have in the past 2 decades because the right are a bunch of morons as the left likes say. They have lost these past 2 decades because the left is owned and controlled by these people who failed to adapt.

Whats wrong with doomerism? It does not necessarily go with giveuperism. Many doomers want to fight like soldiers in a no win situation. Im not going to go out not doing everything I could.

    • searabbit@piefed.social ⁨2⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

I see doomers as people who say they want to fight but then burn up all of that fighting energy doom-scrolling and arguing online instead of channeling it into positive action.

in the doomer subs I used to engage in there was quite a bit of we are fucked but you have to do everything you can to stav it off as much as possible.
