but it just says “a new version is available , do you want to download?” that is not the same as auto updating which would include the required verbiage.
this is a nothingburger.

While it does say that… It should just auto update or actually update post prompt. It’s 2026…

sudo apt uograde
If you switch to a package manager you can avoid issues like that.

I don’t get it

It says it’s going to update but instead of automaticall updating and restarting, it just downloads the installer and you have to execute it, set install location, give it admin rights etc.

All that hassle when you could just run pacman -Sy qbittorrent…
(I swear linux is not a cult and we especially do not sacrifice Microsoft developers every day to our three dieties Linus Torvalds, Richard Stallman and Tux the Penguin.)

The worse version of this is when accepting the box for “Update now?” just opens a browser in their homepage and you have to manually download the installer.
This blacklists the program.

i get this explanation and mostly agree, even though it uses the word “download” right in the pop up.

it’s not “auto” if you have to run the file yourself? idfk

I think it’s because we are used to software updating itself, not having to run the executable manually. I know it’s exactly the face I made when I first updated it lol

It does not say that. It literally said that a new version is available and asks if you want to download it
geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 1 day ago
Technically correct but for most people this means “do you want to download and install the new version” not literally “do you want to just download the new version”
