Kind of weird that nobody talked about that eugenics kinda angle from the biological POV.

What about “What biological features separate a child from an adolescent/an adult” - tough that almost falls in line with the philosopher

    • verdare@piefed.blahaj.zone ⁨2⁩ ⁨days⁩ ago

Yeah, I don’t think most biologists talk much about “bloodlines.”

        Geneticists do, basically.

        Haplogroups.

Yeah, that one is really weird!

As a biologist, my first thought would maybe be what physiological needs my child has and how it will interact with the natural environment. And what strange foods it could potentially eat.

        That’s a much better inclination.

        Cow Milk? Yes/No?

That’d be my first thought, in your line of thinking.

… but you can tie that back to… bloodlines, lineage, peoplegroups, haplogroups, whatever word you want to use.

Most east asians just literally do not have the genetic lineage to support regular consumption of dairy products, the way most europeans do.

Because… we (hi, I’m white) come from a long line of cow milk drinkers, east asians do not.

Its funny reading a bunch of article headlines like “why are so many east asians lactose intolerant?”

        No. Fucking, no.

        We’re the weird ones.

We are the ones who essentially decided to become mutants, due to our dietary choices.

What other animal regularly drinks the milk of another species of animal?

        Here’s another weird one:

        Redheads.

(At least broadly ‘white european’ redheads)

        They … experience pain differently.

While they have an overall higher pain tolerance, they are also more sensitive to certain kinds of pain, and they need a somewhat higher dosage of something like novacaine to experience the same levels of pain reduction as a non redhead.

Student in my physics class: ‘How much energy does it take to kill a person?’

‘Ok, assuming falling from 25 meters results in 100% death rate…’

    Morbid I know…

Well, first you need to define a “person”.
Then you need to define the starting point and what all environmental features you are considering as zero cost.

Otherwise, to calculate energy to kill a person, you need to start by creating the universe.

On the other hand, for a human person, you can either just get a really big syringe and siphon out blood from the heart, or pierce a thin little metal pipe with tactically placed holes, which will let gravity and internal blood pressure do the job. But these require access to a syringe/metal pipe making setup, which has its own energy costs.

I have never seen anyone un-upvote their own post before on this platform (viewing from voyager at least), most of my comments are initiated as pre-upvoted by myself, the author.

I’m thinking either you did undo the auto-upvote, or the other possibility is that it came with zero either way. I might have to start also de-voting my own posts that I am not enthused by if that is what you have done here.

(I’m still on Reddit mode where there might be some kind of running total for my profile, but I never bothered keeping track or angling for extra votes over there much either, it just cracks me up how much the little sorting algorithm metrics mean to some of us even when we might not be willing to admit or even recognize it sometimes)

I wonder what the maximum muzzle velocity for a child would be (without just killing it immediately).

Assume an asbestos sabot so it doesn't get incinerated.

      It's maybe more the acceleration/shock?
Probably a few tens of G before instant death.

      source
      • OshaqHennessey@midwest.social ⁨1⁩ ⁨day⁩ ago

It’s definitely a G-force thing. If I remember correctly from Mythbusters, the human limit is about 10 Gs before losing consciousness, 15 Gs before suffering internal organ damage, and about 20 Gs before instant death.
