Using “streaming” instead of “broadcasting” struck me as an odd choice for someone old enough to remember it.

It’s fine of course, it just stood out to me.

Hey, I’m 60, I’m with the times, not 100 years old! Also, in Romanian, both “to broadcast” and “to stream” can be translated as “a difuza” or “a transmite”. And I stopped paying for cable TV about 10 years ago.

Agreed. Seems we’re losing the distinction between “one-to-many” (broadcast) and “one-to-one” (streaming) transmission models.

        Don’t forget multicast (live streaming)!

Probably more something to do with when they learned English

I’m not Romanian but I remember this very well. One of the very few times I was genuinely happy to see someone dead.

I member. It was accompanied by images of romanian orphanages that still haunt me to this day.

I’m not very keen on Romanian history but I visited a museum in Bukarest once that kind of explained some of the things he did. IIRC he forced women to have lots of children, right? And that’s also related to the many “rural” kids on the street, isn’t it?

Romania was one of my favorite trips ever. Beautiful country. Bukarest was also super interesting with intense contrasts. Beautiful old but pretty beaten up “French” style buildings, brutal Soviet style building blocks, insane roads with a bazillion lanes but at the same time a beautiful center with some parks where you can walk a lot. Modern, old, rich and poor. All at the same time. I spent most of my time around Brasov though. Beautiful place.

Our national broadcast company showed the execution live. I do not know why my parents allowed then 10 year old me watch it, but I remember it well.

“Herkermer Homolka. Formerly of Romania. Free now of the chains of Ceaucescu. Traveling the world, doing good!”

    -Tim Curry in Congo

That movie was one of my favourite as a kid, and it made me look up who the heck Ceaucescu was and why he was disliked

The reason they didn’t stream the shooting was they had him and his wife lined up against the wall and shot before the camera crew could get out of the courtroom. Or so I’ve heard.

No, they recorded the execution. The footage is there to see. I think Op is just talking about the tv station not showing it

Only the final round of shots was filmed because the execution happened too quickly for the television crew covering the trial and death sentence to record it in full. There’s only footage from before and after the actual shooting, by the time the last round was captured, they were already dead. archive.org/details/rec-0001_202010 (around the 1:12:00 mark).

Where can I get a hat like this?

    source
    • zillionth@lemmy.world ⁨3⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

It’s a traditional Romanian hat, you can find it in tourist or traditional shops in Romania.
