Everything’s technically a rental. Nothing lasts forever. That console probably will stop working eventually.

Nope

Physical>emulation/backups>digital purchase.
This should be the path always in order to get games, it is for me.
Squizzy@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Physical isn’t much good if you can’t pop it in and play, lots of games need day one updates to be playable.

Man, I knew this day would come, but I hate now that it actually has a date. My 360 is still going strong, and I'm dreading the day it gives out. Yeah, I could just move everything over to my Xbox One, but I'm not even sure all the 360 games I own are backwards compatible.
verysoft@kbin.social 1 year ago
You can still play games you own, just cannot buy new ones from their digital store.
CharlesReed@kbin.social 1 year ago
Not if my 360 quits on me and they're not backwards compatible or available with my Xbox One.

360s are in their golden age of cheapness right now. They’re outdated, but not get retro. Buy a couple extras and toss them in the closet for when you need spare parts.

Okay, thanks! You’re right, that’s the main thing I care about. The far-superior Original Xbox version of GTA: San Andreas (among others) can only be played on Xbox and Xbox 360…
kratoz29@lemm.ee 1 year ago
I have only played GTA SA in my PS2 and almost a full playthrough in my iPhone 6s 😂
I agree that the Xbox version is the best one (not sure about the PC version though), which is weird that this statement remains valid as of today lol.

The scene begs to get to work and “archive” what’s least since it will be gone forever
Hubi@feddit.de 1 year ago
It’s already been archived. Pretty much every single 360 retail and arcade game is out there to download.
nostalgicgamerz@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Nice. Thank goodness
kratoz29@lemm.ee 1 year ago
I could expect no less from archiving/emulation teams.

Now we wait for XBLIG/XNA emulation…
TheEntity@kbin.social 1 year ago
Will we be able to still access the games already on the HDD?
simple@lemm.ee 1 year ago
From the article:
If you already own a bunch of Xbox 360 digital games, they’ll continue to be playable. You just won’t be able to purchase new games or DLC from an Xbox 360 console.
Empricorn@feddit.nl 1 year ago
That… actually doesn’t answer it. If the games I paid for only exist on my hard drive and not on any store… what happens when the drive eventually fails?
MossBear@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Just out of curiosity, where’s emulation at with the x360 these days?
simple@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Xenia has gotten really good. A friend of mine played through Red Dead Redemption on it without issues. You still need a good CPU, though.
ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 1 year ago
It was still open?

Rest in Peace

I’ll miss my download of Lost Cities and Lode Runner 3D
Stovetop@lemmy.world 1 year ago
It sucks to lose access to digital content on the original console, but I am at least glad that they are continuing to offer access to digital Xbox 360 games/DLC that are backwards compatible on Series X, and that folks can still download content they own.
This is akin to Steam declaring that it will no longer support Windows 7. Which is actually happening at the end of this year.

I agree, posts like this are more of a heads up. It was nice of MS to support Xbox 360 for this long anyways, it’s almost 18 years old now.
