Is it a bad word that would have been in common use most of his life later understood a slur, or a bad word that has always been a slur alone and nothing else?
Always has been a slur. It’s an extremely rude word to use.
In roman dialet is pretty common.
Comment includes heavy slurs
"Today I want to tell you peasants, that there is no place for racism, sexism and patriarchy in our church. We embrace all human beings. And also faggots and niggers and mullahs. We especially embrace beautiful nude small boys!" - the Catholic Church, probably
Honestly, actually quoting his (translated) comments might have been just as powerful.
So this information came from a leaky backdoor source?
Even the church knows no one cares anymore. That’s the time we live in now.

I think you can participate in a spiritual life without being an asshole. It’s unfortunate so many don’t.

Whatever that is supposed to mean, I’m sure you can. But you shouldn’t expect anything of the kind from the head of an organisation with millennia of the most gruesome human rights abuses on their record.

The pope is not just religious. He’s basically a politician as well, which is the more concerning demographic for likelihood of being an asshole.

Not really. Detaching one’s self from reality is inherently hostile to humanity’s future. It’s an asshole thing to do.
To be fair, we’re all assholes far more than we like to admit, religious or not. Being “spiritual” is not especially worse than a whole lot of other behaviors.

Yeah, good luck advancing that belief here, lol.
