  This Gen Xer has to subscribe to the law of flat surfaces or every part of my apartment becomes home to wooden toys, fidget and stress relief items, small musical instruments, penguin statues, polymer clay creations, children’s completed school projects, collectables, antiques, piles of books and art.

    My desk is usually the first flat surface where clutter starts to creep in. Always feel so much better after I’ve dealt with it.

    this past year I’ve reduced stuff on surfaces by 50%, just gotten rid of it

    I prefer to have stuff in cupboards and glass cabinets

    I think I actually flinched reading that. Some pictures are ok, but excessive volumes of pictures means it’s hard for any one picture to really shine.

    Of course you could what galleries do and rotate their pictures (ie replace one with another at regular intervals.

  Bare walls mean it’s easier to see if there is a spider there. Bookshelves/pictures just create hiding spaces for those eight-legged freaks.
