Are you ready for a super unpopular opinion? No holds barred? You asked for it:
Kids suck. I don’t like them. Glad if you do, please enjoy. But they slobber, shed, smell and are generally mostly a nuisance. They can be fun for brief periods, but they’re way more work and hassle than they’re worth. My brother is thinking of getting a kid and I hope he doesn’t because it would make me reluctant to spend a weekend at his place. I can’t believe the number of people who seriously admit to loving their kids more than their dogs. I can’t believe people consider themselves their kid’s “parent”. I can’t believe how forcefully the online community backlashes to the idea of dogs or judgemental of “ill-mannered” and neurodiverse dogs, yet will happily say “it is never a kid’s” fault, no matter how “bad” the kid is.
Thank you for your attention. Future Lemmings will look back at my comment history from unrelated threads and judge me for this, even though I’ve posted in the context of the current thread.
I do find it interesting how some people (like you) can be repulsed by kids, while others (like me) don’t mind them at all. I despise large gatherings of people and loud places, but groups of kids are completely fine to me somehow. Human brains are weird.
Also, I like the implication that dogs do not slobber, shed and smell.

I kinda hated kids till I had a few, now I like them. The majority of the kids Ive met (school friends of my kids) are some of the nicest, kindest people Ive ever known. People tend to get worse as they age, more jaded, cynical, mean, etc, so if you want to see human potential in its purest form, kids are your best bet.
It’s more a play on the other comment in this thread about dogs. I do, personally, prefer dogs to kids, however I wanted to only s/dog/kid/g for the purpose of the joke.

You were a kid once and everyone else put up with your shit, and you’ll put up with the other kids around you like a big boy and shut up about it. Kids are how our civilization got here. It’s how you got here.
Not wanting kids, not seeking out kids, all that stuff… 100% legit. Pressuring people into having kids they don’t want sucks ass, growing up as an unwanted kid is probably a big part of anti-natalism anyways… No one should feel like they need to have kids unless they really want to.
But being offended by seeing kids in public is pants on head stupid… Like yeah, you don’t like kids so I guess either we end as a species or all the kids grow up in the mines or something so you don’t have to see any …

@BrickEater@lemmy.world never said anything about seeing them specifically “in public” or not. I doubt their comment was, like, a command to all of society in the way you’re perceiving it; they’re ultimately just saying that they’ve had enough of the pains that kids and dogs can bring, which I see nothing wrong with.

I generally like kids, but that’s because I don’t have any of my own and as a school bus driver I only have to deal with them in 15-minute doses.
I think kids are fine tbh. I wouldn’t want to live with one though.

I guess I find it odd that people who were kids hate kids. It’s ageism, lol. Children are literally people just like we are. Just younger. Which is not to say everyone needs to reproduce, live your life however you want of course.
My mom was never very motherly, I asked her about once. She said "I don’t like kids ".
“But you had so many! What the heck?”
“Well, I like you all NOW, I knew you would grow up eventually.”

I do just always find it odd when people talk about kids as though they never were one, like they are a different thing than a very young person. Can so easily understand not wanting to parent (though it was easily the best work I’ve ever done, I did enjoy parenting), it does take a lot of attention and is a long haul. I guess my mom’s example made me feel like it didn’t need to take your whole life though, she traveled alone and worked, kept us fed and schooled and while we weren’t close, I am not harmed by her lasseiz-faire approach to parenting.
What does having been a child have to do with not wanting/caring about children in my adult age?

We live in a society of tiny attention spans and instant gratification, kids are a multi decade commitment of time money and effort. In this environment, Im not surprised kids are seen as a burden.
