My experience is that firstly Lemmy is not that diverse and secondly that there are platforms that are not that diverse either but are much more open and capable of discussion. Tildes for example is in general too progressive for me (I'm not from the US, so I don't really fit into its politics/culture wars left-right division, though I'm closer to the left), but it's nowhere near as toxic as political threads around here and it's normally possible to have discussion and disagree in a civil way.

More users will lead to a more diverse range of opinions, and groups will more fiercely fight for what they think is right when they feel validated in the comments feedback.
The pains of a growing platform.

Tildes is mostly better for actual discussion right up until it’s not. The mod/admin gave me a temp ban after I said someone was “kinda stupid” after they said that an entire group of people was “incapable of creating anything positive or of value”. So, you can disparage entire groups on Tildes and it’s fine as long as the mods agree with you.

Well the rules are pretty clear in that you can call other people's ideas stupid, but not other people stupid. Personally I prefer spaces with hands-off moderation and focus on free speech, but those generally don't work in a general discussion platform without any implicit gatekeeping to keep idiots away, so I'm giving this style a chance and so far the results have been far better than most places on Reddit on Lemmy.

So it’s ok to say that a whole group of people is stupid or that they don’t have the capacity for creative efforts as long as you’re not saying that about someone you’re replying to? Is that your defense of this? This person didn’t say this about the group’s ideas, he said it about them as people.
If you’re going to moderate a platform, it should actually be moderated evenly.

Deimos is a dumb piece of shit. Evidence is that Tildes is somehow still invite only after like five fucking years.
It’s the pet project of the dumbfuck to made Reddits AutoMod.
He thinks he knows all about how to build a community because he’s read a lot of books and theory about it, but he never got good at praxis.
He’s just another shitlib.

Why do you think this is a bad thing? The best discussion board that I've been a member of by a wide margin (not mentioning names, it's all in Czech anyways) has been invite only for 20 years now. It's a tried and true way to limit eternal september as long as the community is active enough to not die out, which hasn't happened yet on Tildes.

Lemmy is not that diverse
Understatement of the year. Just like most places on the internet, it leans mostly white, mostly male, mostly from US/Europe, mostly interested in computers/technology. Not exactly a diverse group at all. I’ve definitely had women already tell me this place isn’t exactly friendly to women, but I mean, that’s par for the course for the internet.

It is interesting to be exposed to widely different people. People talk about our internal politics but not usually about, well, socialism or agorism.
BBQThunder@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Yes. As the platform becomes more mainstream, it more accurately reflects society at large. Which is extremely toxic at the moment. 😕 I used to think talking about our differences in forums like this would help, but it seems that no one actually wants to listen to anything but their own echo chambers anymore.

I’m down. I’ve found that people genrally want the same things, we just disagree at how best to get there.
KepBen@lemmy.world 11 months ago
I’ve found that people personally want the same things but have wildly different assumptions about how the rest of us are a threat or asset to those aims.

Lemmy is not at all an accurate reflection of reality. Nobody in my day to day life is going to argue that communism is far superior to capitalism. That’s part of the problem. Us internet dwellers think this is what real people are like but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

How do you feel about Bernie Sanders where it’s a socialist democracy with capitalism? So medicaid, universal healthcare, unemployment, etc., are there and should be expanded to cover everyone?
V17@kbin.social 11 months ago
Did you mean "social democracy"? I don't think there's actual socialism anywhere there - that's still capitalism, only with a strong welfare system, which has downsides, but it's obviously viable at least in some societies.
