Yeah, with the asterisk in the title and the discussion about it, I would think that this was the marketing plan from the start. The movie’s performance may have affected when exactly they decided to pull the trigger on the rebrand though.

Wait, I thought the movie was doing well? I haven’t seen it yet, but reading the article it seems like this is more of a PR stunt to align with what happens in the movie. Apparently it’s revealed they are the new Avengers, so spoilers for everyone who hasn’t seen it yet I guess.

Fortunately I’m not invested in the MCU as much as I once was. Probably worth chucking the spoiler in some spoiler tags though.

Yeah I thought it is doing well. Reviews have been pretty good and word of mouth seems to be decent as well. This is 100% a spoiler for those who haven’t watched it. I did think it’s quite soon from its release to them revealing it publicly like this though

I saw it. It was decidedly mediocre. Roughly equivalent to the last one.

Rumor has it that Marvel was worried it would bomb, and naming it “New Avengers” would put them in an awkward position moving forward. Thunderbolts was the backup-insurance-title basically.
Now that the movie seems to be doing well, it’s getting its proper title.

The group rename is an in-movie plot point…
