Less cognitive load when you know the cast and background already
It’s hard to get excited for a new venture when they die off so fast.
Most shows are “second screen” material anyway, so the less load the better.

I really liked how the ANC speakers didn’t focus on blame, but focused on the path forward. That kind of hope and optimism is really refreshing in today’s discourse.
And they’re clearly not pie in the sky wishful thinkers either, since they already done it and live through it and are speaking of personal experiences.

Excellent video, really hopeful and uplifting message by the end. It is possible to end Apartheid, great motivation from the ANC speakers who spoke of the hope of unification.

I think these tools are good for moderators of communities to create a community they want to run. Lemmy needs that to grow the niche communiy.
In your example, these look like the rules for request for assistance community, begging basically. It’s reasonable that the moderators want to reduce the volume of begging, to people involved in the Reddit community, who have a good standing.
It would be the same if a local community group, prioritize the needs of their local active members in need, before opening the floodgates to the world.
There is also a reality, online, that people will automate request for free money, and basically spam until they get negative money. So without those submission requirements, the sub would be flooded to the point where it wouldn’t be useful to anybody to get any assistance.
So to sum up, we may not like the individual community rules, but the moderators need the tools so that they can moderate and grow the community they want

It makes me really angry when I see it. Somebody from a country where the minimum wage is like $15-20 a hour, begging for money from people were the average wage is like $1 a hour…
I have no right to be angry, I realize, but it just feels so entitled and… the squandered opportunities… Haha making myself angry again

There’s a whole class of YouTube travel influencers, that talk about how to travel for free, or reduce cost… and their tips are basically how do you externalize the cost of your vacation to the people you’re visiting. Through either begging, working illegally, or outright theft relying on the politeness of the population to not get you in trouble.
I really hope, that these influences are just being sensational, and the people are watching them from an outrage porn perspective. But I’ve seen some of these begging travelers in real life… Sadly

Summary🎥
In this video, the speaker discusses the misuse of spirituality as a facade to hide true intentions and exploit animals in the context of veganism.
Highlights
- 🧂 Salt and pepper, beans and rice, toe fish and chips, oat milk and coffee, veganism and ethics – all things that go hand in hand.
- 🧘♂️ While spirituality has many beneficial practices tied to it, it can also be used as a mask for ego-driven intentions and a disconnection from rationality.
- 🕯️ Ex-vegans often claim to have a deeper awareness or connection, but their spirituality is more like an uncanny wax shell than something authentic.
- 🚫 Pseudoscience is the enemy of veganism, as it dismisses the scientific research and data supporting plant-based diets and animal welfare.
- 🥬 Sophia Esperanza’s journey from being an animal rights activist to a vegetarian highlights how spirituality can be used as an excuse for exploiting animals.
- 🌱 In the realm of spirituality, subjective feelings and biases can overshadow scientific evidence and rational thinking.
- 🐓 Idolizing nature and disconnecting from its harsh realities allows for the romanticization of nature without acknowledging the suffering it entails.

🎥 “Hey, it’s Mike here” discusses a recent video by ASAP Science on veganism.
🌱 The video focuses on health, environment, and other aspects of veganism.
🔬 Mike agrees with some points but also provides a point-by-point response
.🎓 He announces completing his Master of Public Health degree and criticizes a beef advocacy program.
🌍 Mike appreciates ASAP Science’s videos but disagrees with some claims in their vegan video.
🥩 He addresses concerns about the environmental impact of veganism and the health benefits of a vegan diet.
🌱 Mike challenges the notion that humans evolved as meat eaters and discusses the availability of plant-based sources of B12
Highlights-
🌍 Vegan diet has environmental benefits, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions and less rainforest destruction.-
🤼♂️ Some historical examples, like gladiators and actors, challenge the assumption that meat is necessary for strength.-
🦷 Humans’ anatomical structure suggests a plant-based diet, and our digestive system resembles that of herbivores.-
🧠 Meat consumption may not be the primary driver of human brain development; cooked starch could have played a significant role.-
💪 Protein deficiency is rare in vegans, and B12 can be obtained from plant sources like duckweed and sea buckthorn.-
🥛 The claim that milk promotes strong bones is debated, as countries with low milk consumption don’t have higher fracture rates.-
🍖 The Epic Oxford study on vegan bone health may be influenced by BMI, which affects bone density.

Well given that Israel does not want to make Palestine independent country. For a variety of reasons. I was moving forward with the only viable solution being a unified country, with a secular government.
Mandatory Palestine, includes all of Israel, all of what is currently considered Palestine, and a bit of the territory of Jordan and I believe Lebanon.
- Comment on [deleted] 1 year ago:
I think if you look at the entire population, the Jewish makeup 4 million, and the Palestinians about 8 million. When you sum up the populations across both countries.
One problem of direct democracies is the tyranny of the majority. So that would have to be addressed here with some sort of representative government, and a strong constitution that doesn’t allow one group to run rough over the other group. It would be the devil in the details, but it’s important

Misaligned incentives. In the United States a percentage of civil assets forfeited are given to the capturing agency. A reward. That’s a bad incentive, bad actors will respond to that.
All civil penalties, finds, fees, forfeits, should be distributed back to taxpayers. The funds to run the government should come directly from taxes. Any other method of payment invites misaligned incentives, regulatory capture, corruption even.
- Comment on [deleted] 1 year ago:
I’ll take a stab at it. Without trying to wish away things that can’t be wished for.
Transition the administration of the contested area (mandatory Palestine basically) over to a secular representative government. With peacekeeping provided by the UN. The secular government should be completely separate from any religion, but have the right to religion as part of the Constitution.
Encourage massive economic integration between the different ethnic populations. There will be civil turmoil for quite a while, but we’re winning slowly, demonstrating the people the future is better together. It’ll probably take two or three generations until things settle down. So we’re looking at an occupying force for 40 to 60 years.
To add legitimacy to this government, they should have a truth and reconciliation panel covering and forgiving all of the crimes of the past, they should objectively, and harshly come down on any land crimes, hate crimes, religious persecution, religious exclusion, that happens inside the country.

Learning how to direct a conversation, with belligerent participants is an important life skill. Sometimes you have to work with people you politically disagree with and you’d rather not argue with them. Keep them focused on the task. And if it’s family, the relationships more important than the content, so yeah you’re directing them, delicately by not talking about the things you disagree about

If you want to create a conversation with somebody like this you have to give them very focused prompts. You can’t just send an article, they’ll just go off the rails. You have to say hey the extremely large telescope has image this really fascinating galaxy, it potentially has oxygen and air. Wouldn’t it be great if we could get a ship out there and explore.
You’ve got to be extremely specific with your prompts. If you give them any latitude, they’ll go back to their old tropes. This especially applies to older people with early stage dementia. Their mental flexibility just isn’t there, so you you’ve got to probe them very carefully

It’s almost like people are looking for a reason to talk about how much they hate JKR, and in turn promote her.
The Streisand effect is in full display here.
Everytime people bring out the three minute hate drum, the righteous come around and sneer, so there is a echo chamber, but there’s always somebody new, somebody who’s never been introduced to the debate before, who now pays attention to this person… And they might end up agreeing with this person.
So giving all this attention to one person over and over again, is creating them more converts than it’s costing them. It’s just promoting the personality at this point. It’d be more effective to ignore them, and just promote your own viewpoint. There wouldn’t be any controversy, there wouldn’t be free media attention…

Because she has insisted that when it comes to determining a person’s legal gender status, self-declared gender identity is insufficient. Because she has expressed skepticism about phrases like “people who menstruate” in reference to biological women. Because she has defended herself and, far more important, supported others, including detransitioners and feminist scholars, who have come under attack from trans activists. And because she followed on Twitter and praised some of the work of Magdalen Berns, a lesbian feminist who had made incendiary comments about transgender people.
- Comment on How can I become a better conversationalist? 1 year ago:
When in doubt ask questions. Try to actively listen to what people are saying, think about what they’re saying, and just ask any questions that pop up in your head. People love to talk about what they’re passionate about, especially questions, it shows you’re engaged. You don’t have to have any original idea or contribute anything, just a series of questions. At the end of the conversation the other party will feel like oh I had a great conversation, even though you didn’t contribute or volunteer any information. You especially see this in diplomats and negotiators, they don’t need to tell you anything about themselves, they just need you to feel good about talking to them.
So just listen for a bit, when somebody mentioned something think about it, start asking questions. You don’t have to provide any anecdote on your own to have a successful conversation.
