- Comment on Has Fast Food Gotten Worse, or Am I Just Getting Old? 5 weeks ago:
The answer is probably "yes"
- Food is probably worse.
- Your taste buds might have changed.
- Your gut bacteria might be different.
I have a couple reasons for believing each.
- Nutrient concentration in food has decreased over time (Veritasium talked about a fascinating explanation for this.) and the desire to find low cost alternatives like HFCS over cane sugar changes the taste of food.
- "Children prefer higher levels of sweet and are more sensitive to bitter tastes until adolescence."
- Your gut microbiome literally changes over time.changing/)

Harris is a common name for Americans. Sarah is too. Her name isn’t Kalama. The error shows how exciting it is to you and your autocorrect.
- Comment on Anyone else feel like Trump has a much higher chance to win then Presidency than Kamala? 4 months ago:
I hear female supporters refer to her as Kamala. I think it might have more to do with the uniqueness of the name. I don’t know of anyone who referred to Sarah Palin as Sarah.

You joke, but I always like that the Poynting vector, which points in the direction of flow of an EM wave is named after John Henry Poynting.
I bet that guy was trying so hard to find a vector to get named after him.

I use them it helps me identify “weeds” so I can know if they’re good for pollinators or have to be removed immediately for invasiveness.
Example: I often keep a couple milkweed plants growing for monarch butterflies.

This is… not true. Orrin Hatch said if Obama nominated someone like Merrick Garland, the Republican Senate would approve it. Obama nominated him, then the Republican Senate said “psych.”
The checks and balances were broken by the Republican Senate because they decided “advice and consent” could be abused to mean “wait until there’s a Republican president.”
The public decided the solution to this was selecting a Republican president and keeping a Republican Senate. It’s a perfect plan for Republicans, because people on the left just blame Democrats so that the same pattern can happen again next time.
- Comment on Is it just me or do Lemmy communities tend to skew left wing? Why might this be? 6 months ago:
Facebook is basically a dinosaur. The demographic that were the first users ran away right around the time when their parents got accounts.

Lemmy users seem older than most social media to me. Why is Star Trek TNG so popular here if not?
- Comment on Pheidippides, if anyone was wondering. 6 months ago:
Not everyone runs it in the shortest time possible. My longest run is probably close to a half marathon. It wasn’t fast and it was fun. If it weren’t fun, I wouldn’t have done it.
That being said, some people who run it in the shortest time possible probably find it fun too.

No slant isn’t great either. If the sidewalk isn’t banked that run seems like torture.

The only time I enjoyed a toxic fan base was for the show Under the Dome. Everyone seemed to hate watch the show and it made the whole thing more fun. The toxicity had the benefit of not being about social issues and just about how the show wasn’t high quality writing.
Off the top of my head, one thing people hated is that the main character hurt her leg and wore the bandage over her jeans.
Man, I should rewatch that show.

Skylar being in this group is low-key insane. She cheated on her narcissistic drug dealing murderous husband. The rest of these folks are murderers or magical torturers.

At the very least, it might be nice if they ask you if you want to go there instead.
On the other hand, I’m just happy that Google Scholar hasn’t gotten completely destroyed by SEO yet.

In fairness, I was thinking specifically of plants. I expect better results when looking up “S. lycopersicum” than “tomato”.
An example off the top of my head is saying pyrite instead of fool’s gold.

scholar.google.com is where you want to go.
Also, in my Google-fu experience technical terms work well for finding better scholarly results.

I’ve heard the best thing they created in Game of Thrones that had no direct book influence was Arya and Tywin’s storyline.

Forrest Gump is one of the many stories that could use a two viewpoints from both the guy and the girl like they did in 500 Days of Summer or The Affair. It’s much easier to sympathize with someone when you get to see the story the way they experience it.
- Comment on Does the rest of the English speaking world generally understand what an American means when they say "soccer", or does it help to clarify by adding "football"? 11 months ago:
People in the USA would probably reword that sentence as “And North America is in the Americas.”
It’s similar to how North and South Dakota are called “The Dakotas,” not “Dakota.”

I think you’re right about the glasses. At the very least they’re probably better than that frying pan. The more I think about it they might be right under that penny.
- Comment on It's dangerous to go alone. Take this. 1 year ago:
I’ll do you one better and rank these instead.
- Lucky Penny
- Caffeinated shoes
- Fatigue masking mask
- Frying pan of flavor
- The cool glasses
- Underwear of febreze
I really wanted to put the caffeinated shoes at number 1, but the lucky Penny sounds OP.
Also, the underwear is an unfortunate item because most people who need it wouldn’t choose it. It’s also the only item that could be simulated with one hour of effort a day (at most) for most people.
- Comment on Why shouldn’t I just give up on Lemmy? 1 year ago:
Lemmy.world is the first one I joined. I think everyone should have an alt on a well-maintained, large instance. A while back, lemmy.world was having downtime, so I made an account on a small instance. That instance went down weeks ago and never came back.

- Comment on The TV streaming apps broke their promises, and now they’re jacking up prices 1 year ago:
Op-ed: Apps promised to free us from ad-supported subscription bundles. Oops!
I feel like that was never the promise. It was just incidental. When Netflix started out they were mailing people DVDs. When Hulu first started out it was free, but completely ad supported.
When Netflix focused on ad-free subscription streaming I think consumers just asserted that that was the standard they wanted.
