- Comment on Microsoft engineer reveals more details about Janet Jackson song that used to mysteriously crash Windows XP PCs 1 week ago:
It’s right in the article, the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) meaning a company like HP or Dell was involved.
They typically only shipped Windows on their devices and Linux probably wasn’t on their radar as it was such a tiny percentage of users and didn’t bring in money.
- Comment on Cybercriminals have stolen almost 100 staff logins at the Big Four banks, experts say 1 week ago:
Basically cyber security researchers monitoring the dark web have found credentials in dumps belonging to bank staff, this is concerning but doesn’t necessarily mean bank systems were directly compromised.
Staff members personal devices may have been compromised by infostealers not necessarily key loggers. Different malware but basically with the same end goal.
Or they could have been the result of a phishing campaign. There are a range of tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) for credential harvesting used by threat actors (hackers).
Typically initial access brokers obtain the credentials and sell them to other criminals and sometimes provide a small set for free so potential buyers can validate before they buy.
Speaking of TTPs that’s what is alluded to when they say initial access, which is a Tactic under the Mitre Attack framework.
attack.mitre.org/tactics/TA0001/
The banks response that there are systems in place to prevent use of these stolen credentials is more than just 2FA but also conditional access policies, active monitoring and cyber threat intelligence and response.
By the time this was published all identified accounts would have received forced password changes.
I have done cyber security consulting for one of the impacted banks, and I think the article is reasonably well researched but not as clear as I’d like for people unfamiliar with the topic.

The key signs of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) required for diagnosis include:
- Growth deficiency or failure to thrive: slow fetal growth low birth weight or height, small head circumference (microcephaly)[14][a]
- Congenital malformations of lips: short palpebral fissurelengths, smooth philtrum, and thin upper lip
- Comment on Anon banters with a friend 2 months ago:
I played ice hockey with a young bloke who had FAS and he was an absolute mess. Zero impulse control, low intelligence and addicted to anything he could get his hands on.
Some of his behaviour would have earned another person a beating but everyone knew and tried… correcting his behaviour a bit more gently.
His dad was clearly making an effort but it was ruining both their lives and he had divorced.
Young bloke ended up offing himself.
On an equally depressing note, once you know what to look for you see FAS fairly regularly in porn.

Obvious bait.
Even citing certain statistics is likely to earn a ban. It isn’t hard to imagine what, given that they are notoriously thrown around by actual racists.
- Comment on The one drawback to walking at night 2 months ago:
Pretty damn sure you would argue that quoting certain statistics would be racist.

Are these best shearers not still commoditizing the products of the body of another thinking being?
What does that have to do with the question of whether or not the process of shearing is violent?
How do we know your claims of non-violent sheering are true?
How do you know PETAs claims are true? (“As reported by PETA, one eyewitness to the process said”)
I’ve been an eyewitness to the process, and I’m not idealogically biased the way PETA extremists are known to be.
Where is the sheep in this shed, now?
What? This sentence just doesn’t make sense. The sheep don’t live in the shed.
The females of the breeds I have observed don’t have horns, and their tails are docked to prevent excrutiatingly painful death by flystrike.
The alternative to wool production in Australia is cotton, which is even more environmentally destructive than sheep are, mostly due to the sheer amount of water required for cotton production. People need clothes so these industries aren’t going away.
Shearers have an interest in not causing unecessary harm to sheep, because it is counter productive. That’s my experience.
The rest of your argument is moralising which I am uninterested in.
- Comment on Don't forget where we came from and what shaped us as a species. The Jungle. 2 months ago:
Have you seen how wool is actually collected?
Yes, in a sheering shed and not on youtube.
It is not violent when done correctly, and the best shearers in the industry who can smoothly and quickly sheer a sheep without injury are highly sought after.

Some of the commentary was a bit harsh, as it’s clear the man has been misled, and unfortunately even some clever people fall into these traps when they’re desperate.
Really though if the vehicle was registered and she had a valid licence… why the fuck wasn’t she driving?

The word was used as a humiliating slur against a vulnerable group of people. This is indisputable fact. It is a word specifically referring to a group of people, and it was used against that group of people to belittle, demean, and humiliate them.
Not something I have disputed, in fact I have made this point repeatedly about the word moron.
The euphemism treadmill stopped.
There will always be a need in language to describe people who are less intellectually capable so I absolutely disagree with this claim. Retard is simply still the word of choice despite efforts to censor its usage.
No one is trying to take away your speech. No one is coming for your words.
Censoring speech is exactly what you’ve claimed isn’t happening, yet it is happening and you are making an argument for the censorship of a word.
Do you use it because it upsets people?
Yes. Because I clearly don’t want to have to waste my time on people who are, or are acting, retarded.
- Comment on Based Red Dead 3 months ago:
So moron is acceptable now because all the people impacted by the discrimination are dead, so we just need to wait for the retards to die off before we can use the word again?
The same group of people and behaviours are/were described by both words.
But we’ve been over this and confirmed we do not and will not see eye to eye on this.
- Comment on Based Red Dead 3 months ago:
To break down my response to this
The R-word is EXCLUSIVE
There are people with high intelligence and those with low intelligence, bandying about with different words will never change that. Intelligence is crucial in social, economic and evolutionary terms. They are correct no one would ever want to be lacking in intelligence because it would only make life worse. There will always be a need for a word to describe someone of lower intellect, or describe an argument or position as being thoughtless, in order to dismiss the person or idea as quickly as possible with as little engagement possible. Preferably while using small words so they understand.
You can still say they have a room temperature IQ but they might not get the meaning…
We are someone that is not your kind.
I agree, and I would not want someone with an IQ of 70 to be in the military, or to be a teacher, or a doctor, as each of those scenarios would likely result in disaster not just for the 70 IQ individual but for everyone impacted by them.
Everyone has a gift
Yea no. This “everyone is special” bullshit just isn’t how the world works. The universe doesn’t care about you, the world is a harsh place where the unfit died early deaths until really intelligent people worked out how to increase food production, developed medicines, surgeries and hygiene.
Retard equates intellectual disability with being DUMB or STUPID
You only need to look up the etymology and history of clinical usage of both dumb and stupid to realise they were used to describe the same groups of people and behaviours during different time periods. More bullshit on the treadmill.
I refuse to censor the word retard while moron, stupid, dumb and idiot are considered fine. To censor a synonym of acceptable words, is to put it bluntly, fucking retarded.
- Comment on Based Red Dead 3 months ago:
I literally had an argument with @PugJesus@lemmy.world about this a while back where he declared retard as against sub rules but then continued to call the poster a moron. They’re the same fucking word from different time periods on the treadmill of what is politically correct.
Either both are slurs that shouldn’t be used or both are acceptable.
