It’s more than just “a man within range of vision”. Obviously we don’t have the full story here, but even in the text, there are specific behaviors that would, arguably, make a reasonable person suspect they were in danger. Depending on the state, that is enough to warrant self-defense definition.
- Comment on Anon walks home in the city at 2 AM 1 week ago:
They had legitimate reason to believe they were in danger. Not assault at all.

One can appreciate a strong argument, even if it goes against what they themselves believe.

I mean I think it’s the adults responsibility to make due diligent efforts to check, but if the minor continues to lie, is it really on the adult anymore? Unless there were glaring red flags that a reasonable person could suspect, I don’t believe the adult can be held accountable.
I have no idea how the law handles this.

Ideally, absolutely. That’s what makes the hallmarks of a great scientist.
In practice, institutionalized science can be just as dogmatic and closed-minded as some of the worst religions.
I have had advisors/coworkers/management straight up ignore certain evidence because it didn’t fit their preconceived views of what the results “should be”. This doesn’t make the process of science objective anymore when people are crafting experiments in ways to fit their views, or cherry picking data that conforms to their views.
And you would be surprised at how often this happens in very high-stakes science industries (people’s lives are at stake). It’s fucking disgusting, and extremely dangerous.

Yeah…I think people also subconsciously craft a persona of the other based on only one data point, and once they have their subconscious creation of the person from the “other” team, they ignore everything else that was written.
I’ve also been trying to reason with them and they also won’t read what I wrote. Or, like you said, it’s possible I wasn’t clear enough, which is certainly possible.
- Comment on Tough Shit 5 weeks ago:
I was speaking in generalizations, not about your specific assumptions.
We all make assumptions about others that are sometimes incorrect. Myself included.
In fact, you’re currently crafting up straw men to attack right this very second. And those straw men are based on incorrect assumptions about what I (or “we”, whoever this mysterious “we” is that you reference) think.
For example, you reference that I am “caring about a random individual who will supposedly like being “defended” “. You are putting quite a few words into my mouth. All I’ve ever done was point out your getting offended by someone asking a question.
I don’t see the harm in pointing out those assumptions. Those who challenge our assumptions make us better people. It helps us grow and learn to disassociate from social media brain rot that gets us pissed off at each other for no reason.
You see someone talking about “gender” and, I assume (although I could certainly be incorrect in my assumption!) that you immediately craft an individual in your mind who has all these other views that you despise. I admittedly do this too. I think we all do to a certain extent.
If someone tells me their stance on abortion for example, I subconsciously craft this individual in my mind and create assumptions about what that other person thinks based on zero rational evidence. I’m trying to get better at realizing when I do this, but in order to get better, my assumptions sometimes need to be pointed out for me.
Wouldn’t you want others to point this out to you?

They were simply asking a question? Why do you assume the nurse is a lady? Tbh I probably would’ve also assumed they were female, but by asking the question, you’re forced to think about the assumptions you make. Which may not be accurate.
You’re literally getting offended over someone asking a question lmao. And of course you’re the one saying everyone else is getting offended. Do you literally just not understand what irony is? Or are you literally incapable of looking inward for 2 seconds, and realizing that perhaps you make assumptions about people and situations that may be incorrect?

Yeah we also have friends in our group that have special diet restrictions/health issues they don’t want the while world knowing about where they can’t eat certain foods.
It’s one thing to ask someone to make certain food, then showing up and not eating any. But it’s likely OP’s guests never asked for all of this. So I don’t really see how OP can be upset that his guests didn’t stuff their faces?
Sometimes people aren’t hungry. Or they’re on diets. Or have legitimate medical reasons for not eating certain foods. It really doesn’t matter. I never understood this logic of getting personally offended because people didn’t eat something I made. I don’t give a shit, more for me! Or I can donate it/save it for later!

I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but is there a reason none of them showed up?? I feel like there has got to be some fault on you (whether it was properly communicating, expecting people who’ve given a ‘maybe’ to show, were they acquaintances you’ve only met once, was it snowing outside, etc. ).
Either you’re truly the righteous one here and all the other 15 people are shitty, or there’s something you’re not telling us.

So I have a friend that sounds a bit like OP.
He plans some event and invites a few people (including myself). I said I already had plans, but would try and make it if my other plans ended early.
Weekend comes around and he prepares a preposterous amount of food for everyone. Like enough to feed a family for an entire month.
My other plans don’t end up ending early, so I wasn’t able to make it. He then sends me pics of all the food that hadn’t been eaten and does this little guilt trippy dance he always does: “my friends and I were really excited to have you join us, guess I gotta throw all this away now”
Like bro…I never said I could go in the first place! And even if I was there, there is no WAY I’d be eating all that food lmao.
I really don’t understand this behavior. It’s like they get a pleasure out of playing the victim constantly.
Not saying this is you, OP. Just wanted to vent a little bit haha

I’m not familiar with the typical procedure for determining repeat missions either, but if I know anything about management and people in a position of power, it was likely a tantrum they threw after they realized they got bested by someone “beneath” them, and it was their way of coming out on top (at least in their minds) in the end.
“Oh yeah? Well, we’re not gonna allow you to fly into space again! 😤”
Like the time management “punished” me by moving my desk away from my coworkers when I stood up for a coworker’s opinion during a meeting that went against management opinion.
Oh no, you’re moving me somewhere where I’m not gonna be harassed and distracted by my coworkers 24/7?? I’ll get peace and quiet to focus on my work? What ever will I do!
It’s just something to get the upper hand to make them feel more in control. I’ve never seen more immaturity and sensitivity in people than I have with those in management and positions of authority (of course there are certainly exceptions, and there have been instances where I’ve had wonderful managers…but they are a rare breed indeed).
