If you happen to live in Massachusetts, US, Uber drivers are now making minimum $32/hr. This is of course without subtracting gas, wear and tear, psychotherapy for having to deal with passengers, etc. … but still.

- Comment on What Refutes Science... 1 week ago:
Ideally, yes.
What ends up happening if your research shows new conclusions on the basis of “better science” is that those in power will probably ridicule your new conclusions and findings since it doesn’t align with ‘accepted’ scientific consensus and doctrine. And by ridicule I don’t mean challenging the new theory on the basis of data/evidence and reasoning. I mean ad hominem attacks on the researchers themselves. “Well, they graduated from a top 30 university and not MIT, so anything they produce is not worth looking into”. You won’t be funded and the status quo will be allowed to continue without significant challenge.
I used to want to be a researcher when I was younger. My experiences have been wrought with closed-mindedness, arrogance, and lack of critical judgment and objectivity. Maybe my experiences aren’t representative, but hearing from others (at least in my field), I see that this is a systemic and widespread problem within the scientific community as a whole.
How long did it take to convince people the Earth was not at the center of our universe?

Few questions:
How far away is the pizza place? Do you live in a remote area? What time of day is it? What are the driving conditions like (snow/rain/other hazards)?
Not saying this is reasonable on DoorDash’s end, but there’s a ton of information we’re missing here. So I don’t understand how people can jump to certain conclusions this quickly.

I think people in positions of privilege can recognize their status, and, in my opinion, have a duty to do more (whether it’s donate to orgs fighting this, or donate time if able to be more flexible with their time and work commitments, etc. ).
There will be people who will be able to take greater risk because they are privileged. There are less financially secure individuals who won’t be able to take as much risk. That’s OK! We don’t need to turn this into a dick waving contest of “who is doing more”
What we don’t need is this bickering amongst ourselves. We’re all proletariat. Some proletariat will have more privilege. And getting the less privileged working class to attack the slightly more privileged/wealthy wage slav- I mean “workers”- is EXACTLY what they want!
DO NOT give the bourgeoisie what they want, c’mon now.

It’s why many people didn’t like the finale. At the end, they basically shove it in your face and say “Look- You’ve been laughing and empathizing with shitty people. Look at how horrible they are” and folks didn’t like the wakeup call.

Yeah, I’m not a “Trumper,” but the amount of preemptive conclusions and quick judgments people make, especially those who claim to be tolerant and empathetic, is quite hypocritical.
I don’t deny that I sometimes jump to conclusions too, but I’m amazed at how people don’t even bother to research for even a few seconds! They see a picture, realize it’s not a person destroying something Trump tweeted, notice other comments that jump to conclusions, and that’s all it takes for them to make their own conclusions.
If those in charge’s goal is to divide us and stifle critical thinking, they’ve been remarkably successful. It’s a shame because humans could achieve so many incredible things if we weren’t constantly divided and consumed by hatred.

This isn’t about this company, but this post just gave me PTSD from a recent interview process.
“Soo, we can’t offer you a salary even though our job listing said we would. But you’ll get 5% stake in our startup, which I’m sure will do great even though I’m using my parents money and have zero business experience! Also no vacation, 60 hour work weeks, oh and no health insurance either. We’re a small business trying to make it work!”
Legitimately had this experience after a fucking 5-stage interview process for some small startup, promising a “competitive compensation package”. I guess I should’ve been more assertive in asking their salary range when they kept giving me vague hints at a bullshit compensation.
Waste of fucking time and money. I could tell they were annoyed that I didn’t treat them as if they were Gods offering me a place in eternal bliss. I said “So you guys can’t offer me an actual salary?” and they had the audacity to come back with “well not everything is about money”…says the dude whose parents gave him $1.5 million seed money to start his own little “marketing” company.
When I declined the offer, they quipped with “Thank you for taking 8 hours of our valuable time to get to learn about the company and drink our coffee”. They also said they would reimburse my parking (city parking) to make the interviews. That never happened. Down about $150 and 8 hours. Did they expect me to fall for some sort of sunk-cost fallacy?
The ego and audacity some of these people have astonishes me. They must be so fucking miserable on the inside.

So my comment was meant to be a shared experience of struggle that others could hopefully relate to in solidarity. Not an opinion or argument. That may not have been clear from my comment.
There’s nothing privileged about quitting a job.
I would 100% disagree with your statement here. There absolutely is privilege in being able to quit a job for some other argument than “I fucking need the money to feed my family this week”
Maybe you have never been in such a situation? I have, and I’ll tell you that it fucking sucks. Having to choose between moral values you hold very close to heart and risking not having a paycheck to care for a number of dependents.
- Comment on Oh well... 1 month ago:
My thoughts as well. “Lol go ahead and fire me? Either I’ll just take another wage slave job or realize that you really fucking need my labor. Either way, two scenarios I can risk myself being in”
I also realize this is a very privileged position to have. Because I’m in such a position, I can be truer to my moral compass and values. Behaving in ways that enrich myself at the expense of others wellbeing would be extremely selfish since I can actually choose not to be selfish and still live a relatively privileged lifestyle.
Just kind of wanting to let people know that even in the fairly upper echelons of social status, there are those who fucking hate the system. I’m economically satisfied, but I’m incredibly deprived of human experience and brotherhood.
The few organizations and groups I’ve been in that had real class consciousness were the most alive and joyous I’ve ever felt, even though at the time I was dirt shit poor. I would give anything to go back to those times. And I am now realizing this wish of mine isn’t fantasy. Enough human courage and anything is possible.
