- Comment on Sunglasses suggestions 1 week ago:
This is a bit outside the box, but you might want to go to the hardware store and look at safety glasses. There are a variety of tints and they are wrap around, making them superior for actual eye protection. Glasses that are open on the side are harder on your eyes.
Granted, you might not care for the look.
- Comment on Would it be silly of me to get a small dog if I am a little afraid of bigger ones? 1 week ago:
Don’t assume smaller means safer. When I was volunteering at a shelter regularly, everyone there agreed that small dogs were more likely to attack than big ones.
- Comment on why is radical acceptance not being a spineless conformist? 5 months ago:
When faced with an issue, I classify it according to one or more of these “buckets”: Bucket #1: Not actually a problem at all (usually just unnecessary drama). Bucket #2: A genuine problem, but not my problem (none of my business). Bucket #3: A genuine problem, but I can’t do anything about it (it is not within my sphere of influence, or is beyond my capability to solve). Bucket #4: A real problem that I can do something about (basically everything that isn’t in one of the other buckets). If an issue may be categorized into buckets 1, 2, or 3, I don’t waste time or energy on it. If it’s in bucket 4, I get to work on it. I think this approach has saved me much stress.
- Comment on Why don't cars have a way to contact nearby cars like fictional spaceships do? 5 months ago:
GMRS has mostly replaced CB now. Cheap and works better than CB at short range. Adoption has been slow, however.
- Comment on Could rising sea levels caused by climate change be thwarted by digging a big hole at the bottom of the sea? 5 months ago:
Next time I go to the beach I’m bringing a shovel, and will dig a hole just past where my feet get wet.
I’m doing my part.
- Comment on Is anyone NOT steaming their Music? 6 months ago:
I only buy music on physical media. It’s the only way I can be sure that I really own it.
- Comment on How to relax and most importantly stop thinking about the things i could be doing? 7 months ago:
Consume less caffeine and sugar.
- Comment on What bottles/containers should I use for shipping from sea level to places at higher altitudes? 8 months ago:
If it’s sauce, there probably isn’t much air. Space in the jar is a partial vacuum with some vapor from the sauce. Air in the container will let the sauce spoil.
You probably just need a heavier container.
- Comment on I did not look up how progressive lenses really work before getting some. 8 months ago:
You’re thinking of adaptive lenses (that darken when in sunlight). OP has progressive lenses, which are a kind of bifocal lens without a sharp dividing line between the near and far vision parts.
You aren’t wrong though.
- Comment on 9 months ago:
Why, this is a crash, nor are we out of it.
- Comment on Millionaire homeowners sued the city of Charlottesville, Virginia, arguing a 10 square mile town whose new zoning plan to increase density had no plan to expand the roads 9 months ago:
And it looks like five families to me. So five families vs. everyone else.
- Comment on Why does Dairy Queen sell food? 9 months ago:
Define “food.”

Nice to know that somebody in my bed is getting some.
- Comment on What programs do you wish a good FOSS alternative existed, but doesn't or most of the FOSS alternatives simply aren't good? 11 months ago:
Microsoft Access. I have one database that I need that’s written in Access, and although I suppose I could convert it to some other system it would be a chore and I’m not that driven to make the change.
I’ve moved almost everything else onto Linux.
- Comment on Today's Survey. One point for everything that you have NEVER DONE 1 year ago:
I got one point for the Walkman thing, but maybe I just forgot.
- Comment on Horses ARE Forever 1 year ago:
Self driving, too, provided you want to go where the horse wants to go.
- Comment on Murica 1 year ago:
I have considered an e-bike. I believe I might be safe on one in some situations, but not as a daily driver. As mentioned, my balance is very poor. I can manage a stand up scooter for short distances. But the penalty for a fall at my age is far too high, and so anything on two wheels is really not going to be acceptable. Thanks for the thoughts though.
- Comment on Murica 1 year ago:
Try this when you are in your 70’s and come back and we’ll chat. And bring a cure for my chronically poor balance on your way over.
- Comment on What is the weirdest argument you’ve overheard? 1 year ago:
Not exactly an argument, but I once overheard a restaurant owner bribing a cop. It was an Italian restaurant in San Francisco. Kind of unsettling, but the food was great, and reasonably priced. 4 stars.
- Comment on Yesterday in Kroger (a supermarket for you non-Americans) I saw a bunch of cans of potato salad. Why would someone buy canned potato salad? 1 year ago:
I’m just waiting for canned bread.
- Comment on Is it normal to be disgruntled? 1 year ago:
I was never gruntled in the first place.
- Comment on How do you search for honest product recommendations? 1 year ago:
He doesn’t just test them, he tests them exhaustively and (in shade tree fashion) scientifically.
- Comment on What caused the change in electronic terminology? 2 years ago:
Rheostats are two wire devices, think of them as current controlling. Potentiometers are three wire devices, typically used as voltage dividers. They are not the same.
- Comment on If you were to turn into food, what food will you turn into? 2 years ago:
Worm food.
