Downvoting has far less meaning on lemmy so there are far less downvotes.

“Fewer” is correct, but it’s wrong to correct “less” to “fewer”. Why? Because language isn’t dictated by an authority, it is negotiated theough billions of interactions every day.
People say “less” to refer to countable objects and nobody is confused by it, so it is valid communication. Just because you had some English teacher mark you down for it in middle school doesn’t mean it’s wrong. You were just miseducated.
Even if we’re talking about strict technical semantics, 5 is less than 7. The < symbol is not called the “fewer than” symbol. “Less” can encompass the concept of “fewer”, so either is fine.

People generally vote less here because there’s no shitty karma system here. This also results in a significant reduction of the “hivemind” phenomena.

Reddit boosts up votes so it appears more popular than it actually is.

I literally cannot recall the last time I downvoted something here...
But also people tend to be far more friendly here, or at least reasonable. Except for the outright trolls who I simply block and move on (on Reddit there were simply too many to count - basically every post and even comment I would just come to expect it almost guaranteed). I am on Kbin btw so probably a lot of the worst instances on Lemmy are already blocked for me.:-)

I agree. Lemmy is a fickle place

I looked into it, I knew that raw numbers there are more downvotes on Reddit due to sheer volume, but I was surprised by the ratios too.
Back in the days I used Reddit, somewhere I’d heard that an 8:1 up to down ratio was the average for the longest time (~89% upvoted). So that was kind of my baseline when looking at this question. However, I wanted to do some !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world research out of curiousity so I dug into your query.
Enjoy this data:
Comparison of 10 Top Day Posts on reddit versus lemmy world:
| | reddit.com | | | lemmy.world (All) | | | |---------|------------|-------|-------|-----------------|------|-------| | Top Day | Up | Down | Ratio | Up | Down | Ratio | | 1 | 41777 | 2199 | 95% | 984 | 30 | 97% | | 2 | 39541 | 2524 | 94% | 836 | 11 | 99% | | 3 | 37370 | 5096 | 88% | 807 | 6 | 99% | | 4 | 34465 | 4260 | 89% | 807 | 7 | 99% | | 5 | 33924 | 1049 | 97% | 799 | 26 | 97% | | 6 | 32029 | 2411 | 93% | 741 | 4 | 99% | | 7 | 29537 | 2568 | 92% | 710 | 5 | 99% | | 8 | 29332 | 4775 | 86% | 696 | 7 | 99% | | 9 | 27940 | 1471 | 95% | 671 | 6 | 99% | | 10 | 27606 | 2730 | 91% | 627 | 8 | 99% | | Total | 333521 | 29082 | 92% | 7678 | 110 | 99% |
Comparison of 10 Popular(Hot) posts on reddit versus Active posts on lemmy world:
| | reddit.com | | | lemmy.world (All) | | | |---------------------|------------|------|-------|-----------------|------|-------| | Popular(Hot)/Active | Up | Down | Ratio | Up | Down | Ratio | | 1 | 3931 | 486 | 89% | 803 | 26 | 97% | | 2 | 1296 | 211 | 86% | 627 | 7 | 99% | | 3 | 13939 | 581 | 96% | 751 | 4 | 99% | | 4 | 19790 | 1263 | 94% | 310 | 12 | 96% | | 5 | 20326 | 629 | 97% | 992 | 30 | 97% | | 6 | 17586 | 3103 | 85% | 279 | 3 | 99% | | 7 | 9171 | 284 | 97% | 814 | 7 | 99% | | 8 | 27940 | 1471 | 95% | 302 | 3 | 99% | | 9 | 591 | 177 | 77% | 247 | 2 | 99% | | 10 | 9767 | 1590 | 86% | 292 | 7 | 98% | | Total | 124337 | 9794 | 90% | 5417 | 101 | 98% |
So there you have it for posts, way more downvotes on Reddit than I chalk it up to some instances not having downvotes, and people don’t really care to downvote posts besides clickbait, spam, controversial topics, flamebait and stuff.
I know Lemmings like to downvote comments here and there but it’s harder to get a real comparison because I don’t know how to get comment upvote/downvote ratios from Reddit whereas old Reddit still has upvote ratios.
