Banned from Mental Health and falsified modlog...

Hello, I’m relatively new to Lemmy and not sure how the instance administration works.

I spent around 3 hours writing up a long post for the Mental Health community detailing my personal history of symptoms, the issues I had with diagnosis, and the understanding of the root causes of AI that led me to realize what was causing my trouble with the medication I was on as well as why symptoms that were actually caused by ADHD had been diagnosed as Major Depressive Disorder or the like more than once.

Because the post got very long, I decided to break it into sections with headers and some bullets to make it easier to read.

The post had several replies that were all normal discussion on the issue, and violated no rules of Lemmy.world or that community. One of the two mods removed the post without warning and listed the reason as “AI rambling about serious medication and how the doctors don’t know better.”

I tried to message the two mods listed and got no response from either. Since I was in the middle of multiple conversations in the replies, I created a new post questioning deleting a long post in what they describe as a safe space to share and discuss mental health issues.

While continuing conversations in that new post, I got a popup that told me I was banned from the community. The reason they put in the modlog this time was “medical misinformation.”

Both of those modlog entries are false. The first is an assumption they made at a glance. They then deleted that post based only on their assumption without bothering to read the post first.

The second is a blatant lie. There is nothing at all in either post that is medical misinformation. In the first post I even took the time to explain the various symptoms that can present depending on which neurotransmitter a person has a deficiency in the availability of as well as why my medication that targeted only one of those neurotransmitters was causing me to be tired even though it was a stimulant, and how a severe deficiency of both neurotransmitters can be diagnosed as depression since those symptoms aren’t commonly associated with ADHD.

All of that information is accurate and all of that information can be verified.

In the second post, the one that I was banned from the community for, I had never even given medical information in the post. It was entirely calling them out for deleting a post without bothering to even read it in what they claim to be a mental health safe space.

You’ll note that one of the comments is a user saying that this entire instance isn’t a safe place for any community.

The Mental Health community averages one single post per day. It’s not a lot to ask of a moderator, and something they volunteered for. This is not how to grow a new communication platform.

If the moderators of the lemmy.world Mental Health community are unable to keep up with that whole post per day by actually reading it and communicating with the poster if they see an issue, and they need to rely on removing posts based on blind assumptions and then instead of correcting their mistake doubling down by banning users based on complete lies then I volunteer to take over as moderator of that community.

  Yes, but why would you put the burden of proof on the person accused of spreading medical misinformation, especially given the circumstances?
  
  Wouldn’t it be far simpler and more direct to expect that if a person is accused of something like that and banned for it the one doing the accusing and banning be able to point to specifically what they had an issue with, so that everyone can easily verify that specific thing is medical misinformation if they’d like?

That seems odd for a community with an average 1 post per day.

I think many mods here are reddit agents that infiltrated lemmy.

I’ve had a similar experience with some other subs. Basically now if I’m repeatedly banned from some community, I choose the next largest community and post there.

It’s crazy to me that 1post a day communities would ban willing participants

  Thank you. Your name is one I see constantly, one of the people putting in a lot of effort to make sure this is a place with a real flow of content for users to interact with. I appreciate you taking the time to reply here. :)
  
  Mental Health is described as the safe space to share information and discuss about that topic here on Lemmy.world. I took the time to spend 3 hours trying to detail my difficulties in getting an accurate diagnosis, the understanding that finally helped me do it, and a surface level understanding of the neurotransmitters behind the problems and how the medication I was using was designed to target only one.
  
  That seems like exactly the sort of thing you would want in such a community. The post had many upvotes and an unusually fast moving and entirely friendly and positive comment section. To delete that and then ban the user permanently when it’s questioned…
  
  In a niche community I would just move on. But in the Mental Health community here? One of the largest, dedicate to such a sensitive issue? That’s the sort of thing that could push someone going through a crisis to suicide. It’s the direct opposite of a safe space for those issues.
  
  That seemed the sort of thing the administrators of the instance would have some concerns about. Lemmy is in desperate need of attracting new users, and treating a first time poster in a community dealing with a sensitive topic for many that way is the sort of thing I’d expect them to have issue with. I understand the admin team is likely small and it’s a Sunday, so I’m giving it until tomorrow and then emailing about it.

  I wasn’t trying to pick fights. It’s an odd situation. After I posted the post had a good amount of up votes and replies from many different people. The comment section was unusually fast moving for Lemmy and it was entirely positive and supporting. Then it was deleted by the mod.
  
  After that I made a post calling that out as strange behavior without bothering to read it or say a word in such a slow moving community on a post attracting users to interact with that community. Many of the same other users picked up the conversations we had been having in the first post there, and once again many other users replied. Everything was positive between all of the users. Several questioned the mod doing that without reading the post, but no one said anything offensive towards anyone at all.
  
  Then that post was also removed, and I was permanently banned for the community for a falsified reason. I messaged two users I’d been mid-conversation with to let them know what had happened. One of them made a post on it, and this time the mod /u/givesomefucks finally said his first words, threatening to ban them for questioning his actions. In short order 4 other accounts that had all been made within a few days of /u/givesomefucks and had all had no involvement in either of the threads jumped in to attack the user calling them a whiner and mocking them.
  
  That’s highly unusual when until then every response between all users had been positive, even after the first post was removed and that was questioned in the second. When I made the post here, many of those same alts that I hadn’t had a single word of interaction with that had only appeared to mock users in the Mental Health community for questioning a mod’s actions also instantly appeared in the comments here. All of them defending the mod’s actions.
  
  That doesn’t scream of natural user interactions, it screams of someone flipping through alts.

  The display name doesn’t violate any rules, but if anyone ever messaged asking for it to change I’m not emotionally attached to it and would do that.
  
  But the first post was removed and called AI, and then when I posted calling that out I was banned for “medical misinformation.” Never a word about the display name.

Couple of things. First, I’m sorry for your mental health struggles and your ban from a mental health community.

I think what you’ll find is that people get such a hard on for hatred of AI, that you’ll likely get posts banned and removed from other communities if people think you are using it. Is it fair? It’s besides the point, really. It’s just that unfortunately it’s not going to be very popular…fairness or not. As you’ve seen, even suspected AI use has the risk of people acting this way to you.

Next, neurotransmitters and the brain are a hell of a lot more complicated than they appear. Remember when everyone thought that major depressive disorder was simply a deficiency in serotonin? Well, modern evidence shows that that isn’t at all the case and it’s much more complicated than that. It doesn’t change the fact that SSRIs can be beneficial, but it changes our understanding as to how and why they may be.

ADHD is not simply a deficiency of dopamine and norepinephrine. Reducing it to that is highly inaccurate. If that were true, then drugs that increase both of these would be curative. But they aren’t. Symptoms are managed with ADHD drugs, but you’ll still struggle.

ADHD involves disturbances of dopamine and norepinephrine, but as to why and how that comes to be is another question. You can look at it as correlation versus causation. There is clearly an association there, but not necessarily a causative one.

Psychological disorders are no longer viewed as simple dediciencies in specific neurotransmitters. That is really not the case anymore with modern research. So in that regard I can see how someone would call an assertion with that as misinformation.

  The only person who acted that way was the moderator who removed the message without bothering to read it. The many people who had replied before that had no issue. Since they had bothered to actually read the words instead of simply glancing at the fact that there were headers it would have been obvious it hadn’t been written by AI.

  I never said they weren’t extremely complicated. I was attempting to provide a surface level explanation of how people with symptoms that don’t get listed as typical ADHD symptoms such as complete apathy can actually be showing an unusual symptom of ADHD that doesn’t get enough attention and is often misdiagnosed.
  
  Of course the brain is extremely complicated. One of the reasons for taking the time to write the post was having ADHD repeatedly misdiagnosed as flavors of depression because the combination of Aphantasia and an intentional inner monologue meant my internal experience was unlike those of the people writing out what to look for and so I wouldn’t be using words that would make a mental health professional think of noise.

  Both dopamine and norepinephrine operate on a U-curve where both too little and too much cause issues. As people have varying levels of availability of the two and many of the medications for the condition effect both to varying degrees it’s a balancing act.

  I never claimed anything was the root cause of anything. I did not claim to be a magic wizard who is capable of fully analyzing and understanding the minutia of the many different chemical reactions taking place in every cell in the human mind or body at any given instant. In fact I pointed out that studying the available level of neurotransmitters where they need to be in order to be effective since a lot of those things can’t be tested on a living person.

Altered neurotransmitters are a symptom and trying to alter them in other ways with drugs may or may not help a given user. I’m not saying that psych drugs are useless or anything, just that they are more complicated than you’d think. I take a psych med, myself.
  
  I never said they are. A simple deficiency would be the body lacking a given thing, it would be a production issue. If that were the case no ADHD medication on the market would be effective, because none provide those neurotransmitters. The issue is a deficiency in the availability of the neurotransmitters. That could primarily come from either the neuron failing to release them rapidly enough, or the transporter removing them too quickly. The transporter is considered the most likely primary issue, though it’s very possible that multiple things play in to it in combination
  
  Your statement about ‘altered neurotransmitters’ doesn’t make any sense. The neurotransmitters themselves are fine, and no ADHD medication attempts to alter them.
  
  At the tail of that long response (which I appreciate) separated from anything else you say:

  And to your edit, once again that’s irrelevant. You’re more than capable of looking at the mod log. The mod removed the first post claiming I was using AI and saying I know better than doctors. Neither of those things are accurate. The mod removed the second post in banning me for “medical misinformation.” They did not attempt to say what they found to be misinformation, did not bother to respond to the message I had already sent them questioning the removal of the first post, and still have never bothered to reply.
  
  Note that the post that they banned me for misinformation for was the second post, not the first. The entire body of the second post was questioning the act of removing a post they clearly hadn’t read in what the sidebar claims is a safe space to discuss mental health issues. That is what led to me being banned for “medical misinformation.”
  
  It’s indefensible. It’s obvious what happened. They assumed a post was AI and deleted it without bothering to read it. I posted again questioning that and so they banned me. They didn’t want to put “respect muh authoritah” as the reason for permanently banning a user in the modlog, so they lied and wrote “medical misinformation.”

  Ahh, now it makes more sense. You’re either trying to shift blame from your friend or you’re /u/givesomefucks using an alt. The two accounts were made within 20 days 3 years ago, you both mod multiple communities.
