But Your car needs to be at least 20 years old for this to happen. Used to happen a lot when I was driving a 1989 VW Golf.

I can second this. I once got 2nd and 4th gear back in my 1993 Saturn LS1 after getting some air time off a decent bump on a country road.
Coincidentally, that same bump is how I lost 2nd and 4th. Life can be tricksy mistress.

my 2002 ford truck had a similar issue, because there was a weak solder spot on the main board in the instrument panel
the windows and radio would go out randomly and a bump in the road would usually bring it back. Getting that fixed was easy enough when I had the truck in the shop for a other projects. They had to send it to a specialist but its been perfect since… but the passenger side airbag is electrically fed by a small incandescent light and the bulb has burned out so the stupid thing throws an error. You have to take the dashboard apart to get to the stupid light so I just ignore it
