I feel like this should have been a slam dunk for me. I like shmups, I like short games, and I have fond memories of the original.
But it’s just not clicking for me so far.
It might end up one of those games that I play for an hour after buying it, leave it for a year, then come back and play it to death. Who knows.
The controls feel … off… somehow. It looks pretty, it hits a lot of the notes for gameplay. The change in how the characters are portrayed is ass. Not worth the asking price… if it was a 19.99 msrp it would be more in line.
Played through it a couple of times now. I love it. The Arwing feels amazing. The Landmaster feels clunkier than I remember, but I still enjoy it. The music is fantastic! These fully orchestrated tracks are almost worth the price of the game (for me).
The game is still super fun with lots of replay value. I admit most of my feelings are coming from nostalgia, though. So, if you’ve never played StarFox 64 (or any StarFox game), it might be a little too expensive on its own, maybe…? That’s something each person is going to have to decide on their own, though. For me, I’ve really enjoyed it so far!
Played through a friend’s copy and loved it. I play the old one a lot and other than getting used to the dpad instead of c buttons, didn’t have to adjust at all to play this one. The multiplayer streaming to the switch 1 worked impressively well too.
My only complaint is that the voice acting isn’t as good but it could just be nostalgia.
I actually feel like they nailed the voice acting. I think we just have 30 years of nostalgia for how the lines were delivered in the original. The new one tries to keep the spirit of the original, while giving it a new coat of paint.
I remember the line from Slippy in the trailer “Cover me while I fine-tune my sensors!” and then the ensuing “Oh! You got em? Thanks.” to be so much more needlessly forcing in his engineering personality. No particular issue with voice acting, I think esp coming off the FF7 Remake, I just get annoyed at Japanese devs trying to overcomplicate a script.
For the most part I think the new English voice acting is good, but it’s Fox’s in particular who feels more phoned in, which is unfortunate when he’s the main character.
Falco’s VA on the other hand I think captured the character’s personality perfectly.
I’ve done several full playthroughs on all routes at this point. I think it’s fantastic as a whole. The levels have all the fun of the original but it feels a little tuned to feel modern. I played the original and this one back to back to compare. The new one definitely feels tighter and smoother on aiming and movement. The challenge mode additions are super fun if you are the kind of person who enjoys replaying levels over and over to improve your score. Expert mode is also a fun addition that helps the levels feel fresh. It scratches the itch I’ve had for new Starfox for a decade, if only a little bit. The multiplayer is also great, with the only real problem being that it only has 3 maps. It even has a bot mode for offline players. I also have come around completely on the art style and voice acting. I like the fact that Starfox is actually portrayed as the mercenary band they are, rather than just doing good for the sake of being good. Feels like gaming in the 90’s again, campy dialogue and all. The price point is a bit high for what it is, but ultimately I’m happy with my purchase. For me, this is the definitive Starfox experience. I hope they are able to use this as a springboard to revitalize the series going forward.

I noticed this too. Some reviews were complaining that Fox is abrasive and more self-interested, and I’m like duh he’s a mercenary.
I bounced pretty hard off of the demo. Hoping the full version has in-game button remapping. My hand does NOT like using A as a perma-mash/hold button. Yes, I know you change it in system settings, but until you can assign mappings per-game it’s an awkward kludge.
Doesn’t the switch have system-level button remapping?
They just said that they know it has system-level button remapping, but find it too clunky since its not per-game
So far I’ve played the first level and not gone back yet. Not the game’s fault; it’s just been a stressful couple of weeks at work and I’ve not been in the mood to get into something new.
Not a particularly useful perspective, but there we are.
I’ve only played the demo so far but it looks and feels amazing. Probably will be buying it soon.

I love the game. It’s for me the definitive way to play StarFox 64. I hope this open door for Velen to make true sequels.
I’ve had a rough few weeks and Everytime I play the game I leave with a smile on my face. It’s been a long while since any game I’ve played has done that.
