Did you create an account just to be sanctimonious and superior?
Do you have a flagship phone or a car that's 2021/newer but are struggling financially?

Yeah, if only I had gotten an older model of iPhone 3 years ago, then all my student loans would be gone! /s

Weren’t they going to forgive student loans last year or something. Oh wait nevermind. The debt must continue.

Lol nope. Just a 12 year old, paid for car and a two year old, paid for phone along with my financial stuggles. Thanks for asking.

This is considered good in USA. So you’re doing fine, honestly.

I’ve been unemployed for nearly six months and were it not for my amazingmy generous girlfriend I’d be homeless.

I have a (refurbished) namebrand phone but I’m not struggling financially. I worked damn hard and got damn lucky to get to this point, though.

Makes sense. Cars for most people are money pits. On top of that, the insurance sucks even more.

Total expenses for my almost 20 year old truck are around 300€/month. While not cheap, it’s not that expensive either. Housing and food are by far the biggest expense categories for me.

If I owned a car outright, and never drove it, I would still be paying about $1500/yr in insurance and parking fees. Add in gas, maintenance, and the actual cost to buy and I couldn’t afford it.
Good thing I don’t need it.

As of a couple of months ago, sort of. I have a Google Pixel 8 and only recently got a reasonably well-compensated job. I got the phone in 2023, shortly before I was laid off, and it was on a fire sale in anticipation of the Pixel 9 released, so I’m only paying $4/month for it, $100 total plus the $70 up front.
My car is a 2007 model year that I could only afford because it was in an accident previously, though.

Sounds smart and sustainable

For now. I’m just hoping that the Pixel lasts until Fairphone brings back the headphone jack and the car lasts until I can move somewhere where I don’t need one.

nope. Although if I was not struggling I would likely be discussing cars with my wife as ours is 10 years old.
Perspectivist@feddit.uk 1 month ago
I consider a 10 year old car to be practically new. Older models are much nicer design-wise anyway than these new computers on wheels.
HubertManne@piefed.social 1 month ago
Its a dodge.
psygod@lemmy.world 1 month ago
That’s not old. Do maintenance and use it for another 15 years
HubertManne@piefed.social 1 month ago
Our discussions go on for some years because we will need to save to get to the point of replacement. Its more like. Gee the car is getting up in years. They sorta ruined the model so we have to start thinking about what we would want for a replacement. We need to carve out time to do some test rides of possible models.

No but I have some cunt trying to be smug in my lemmy-feed which is challenging me emotionally.

Cranky

I’m on 5h sleep per night for the last five years. So you may have a point there. 🤷♂️
