The GOP is not protecting children from anything. It never has done. The GOP is protecting itself by directing the rage and wrath of its base away from its own incompetence and malevolence so that its base doesn’t see it for what it is: a collection of billionaires and billionaire quislings worsening the conditions for non-billionaires at an accelerating pace.
Trans is just the latest in a long series of distractions that the conservative base keeps stupidly falling for. (My introduction to their bullshit was the crusade against Dungeons & Dragons and the closely-related Satanic Panic. Ever notice how both those aren’t things anymore? Did they really protect children against the harms of D&D given that D&D’s current edition is the best-selling version of that game in history? No, because it was never about protecting children.)

US conservatives lost the war against homosexuality and so they needed to move on to a new target that didn’t have as much mainstream acceptance (yet). There is no good reason for their hatred other than that the fundamental purpose of conservatism is to divide the world between a privileged in-group and a marginalized out-group.

it’s really silly when it’s simplified like that, but yeah. Slavery and racism, women’s rights, and gay rights are kind of out of style now. Rallying against them doesn’t get the voter base they used to get, so they have to lean into a new scapegoat.
Black people just want to live their lives. Women just want to live their lives. Gay people just want to live their lives. Trans people, contrary to most people, still want to live their lives.
When it’s not cool to target transgender people anymore, they’ll move on to something else. That’s what they’ve always done.
