My gfs brother married into wealth and is now a trump supporter. He grew up in rural New England.

they were always selfish, they only wanted leftist ideals because they couldnt see themselves being rich and it was their best option to lift themselves up, now with a rich husband its better for themselves to be republican, a lot of liberals are only liberals for themselves to make their own lives better and if they get better through other means or they have to work hard to improve it they turn republican, like the paid off their loans and worked hard throughout school so student loans shouldnt be forgiven for anyone else because I had to work hard, or I had an abortion and it made me feel bad because I wanted a kid/life with that person now we arent together they are with someone else so no one should have abortions ever

I don’t get this if I suddenly got a lot of money I would use it to go start the hippie commune and further the revolution like fuck buying a Mercedes or whatever rich people do
Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 9 hours ago
Yes, and that is why people like you and me will never be rich in the first place. This mindset completely prevents it.

I could make some cash if I did some unethical things

i just wanna fucking be able to give people i meet $20 if i feel they need it, and not have to even think about how it affect my ability to buy food
grrgyle@slrpnk.net 6 hours ago
I had that for a bit. Felt about as good as you’d think (pretty good). Directly helping (like with your labour) still feels better, though.

I’m right there with you. I’m not super well off, but I have my emergency funds plus some extra and across a couple of close friends of mine I have given away $3k$4k because of life fucking them over with no expectation that I will ever see that money. The instant I made that decision in my mind the money was theirs to do with whatever they wanted to.
I have never understood people who expect to be thanked or paid back when being “generous” or charitable, especially with those close to them. It almost entirely defeats the purpose in my mind. I generally find being thanked kinda uncomfortable and the only thing I care about is knowing that they received it.
On the subject of buying an expensive car. If I ever did come into a lot of money, I probably would treat myself, but not to some shiny thing. Oh no. I would take the equivalent amount of money and use it to turn something like a station wagon or utility van into an absolute monster. That sounds way more fun.

Maybe you will, and I sincerely hope that is the case for you. However, there are many, many studies demonstrating that this is not the case for most humans.
-
It’s all about power and control; money is merely the scorekeeping system
-
When people start accruing some power, in money form or otherwise, brain structure changes
-
Exceptions to this are the rarity
-
This is why humanity is stuck in the boom-bust doom loop for the history of civilization: a few people think they figured out the recipe to get all the power. They do the same shit that has been tried in the past, but somehow THIS time is going to be different for them. But it’s not, and they end up in guillotines, whether literal or metaphorical. And the cycle starts all over again.
There are few exceptions to this doom loop, and the Salish Tribes leap to mind. They lived in balance with their lands and each other for at least 13500 years. Too bad they also got fuct by colonizers.
Example sources (but there are so many from which to choose):
- news.cornell.edu/…/people-who-focus-too-much-mone…
- Pretty good roll-up of conclusions across many studies: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10461512/

Well, at least she’s accurate in her no longer having a soul I suppose.

Mildly 100% Accurate

The cognitive dissonance on that 180 must be a hell of a thing.

Ehh. The default setting of life is to be ignorant - not politically engaged. So when someone does something like this meme they generally just go back to (now willful) ignorance.
Essentially they’re Cypher from the Matrix, but instead of having their memories wiped with machine technology they use Ambien and Champagne.

Hello, Hollie Valance? I’ve got a meme for you.

Gold-diggers gotta dig. Ngl I could never have a spouse making more than me, I’d just feel like shit about myself.
Speculater@lemmy.world 7 hours ago
You alright bro? My wife out earns me and our life is chill as fuck.
gigachad@sh.itjust.works 9 hours ago
My SO makes double my income and I am very happy for her. I feel good to know she is financially independent from me. Imagine it doesn’t work out with us in the future, that would be really shitty for her.
Kecessa@sh.itjust.works 8 hours ago
After years making more than my GF I told her that since she’s out of a job at the moment, she could use the opportunity to find a job in the public sector so that she has the chance to be the one making more at some point… She’s always stressed about money (even if we split bills based on our respective income), but she keeps looking for jobs that are underpaid considering her skills because she doesn’t believe she can land something better…
HellieSkellie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 hours ago
That’s weird as fuck, guy
Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 7 hours ago
you do you but i’d totally be down for a sugar mommy who gets greeted by fresh cooked dinner every day

Your a man, clearly. Women almost always date men who man more.
Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 7 hours ago
Women almost always date men who man more.
Well, yeah. It’s easier for a man to man, than for a woman to man. That all tracks.
Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 9 hours ago
It goes both ways. Women on average want a man who earns more than them and men on average want to be the one earning more.
pjwestin@lemmy.world 7 hours ago
Well, at least they’re honest.
Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 9 hours ago
Everyone’s so tired and broken down with all our societal problems that they’re just trying to make enough money so the problems don’t apply to them anymore, rather than trying to tackle the actual underlying issues…
Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 9 hours ago
I can definitely feel this applying to me. The more financially independent I become the more I’m also checking out and focusing on just my own life.
EvacuateSoul@lemmy.world 7 hours ago
I don’t have much power, so I just do my best in the system in which I’m born.
What’s funny is how much better I do it than the right wingers I know. I will probably retire very early, and they are check to check. I don’t even like this stupid system.
scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 6 hours ago
Same here. I do okay. I voted against my interests to tax myself more to improve our societal systems and help others. I was overruled by people in need voting to get rid of the systems they depend on. So, idk how to feel anymore
