Given the way that science headlines are composed, I’m sure this is, if not an outright lie, then a gross exaggeration, and if neither of those, a very clever interpretation of something that is otherwise probably much more mundane than it appears.

That would likely depend on their motives. If they are wanting to infiltrate and don’t have a good cloaking tech, then entering on a day when any reports would likely be dismissed would be a spectacularly intelligent decision.
