Iâm gonna go on a little rant about Halloween. Kids, pets and even adults dressing up, meeting your neighbours having a bit fun. Iâm all for that. Decorate your house inside and out. Great.
Now hereâs the thing. People take this shit way to far. Instead of just walking a few streets with your kids, meeting new people, itâs now âletâs go and collect as much shit as possible from strangers before others get thereâ.
How do we do that? We will drive around in our people mover looking for houses because Facebook mums have posted where the best streets are for little Johnny to collect his treats and heâs only 3 and the size of a small hippo and he canât walk far.
Itâs now a car door slamming competition with a stampede. Aussies are great innovators. We take shit from around and we adapt them to suit us. Halloween is not one of them we do well.

Iâve got no problem with the little Johnnys of this country. Itâs the parents who are pimping their kids out so they can gorge on the fruits for ron.
These people sound greedy as hell, and in being this competitive are kind of missing the point of the exercise.
I love Halloween in theory but I deliberately play possum to avoid being approached by strangersâ children⊠or really anybody.
I have high fences all around. No one can get in here.
Same . At the same time there are few young families around here.
I find it an interesting opportunity to observe the different facets of human nature. I live in an area with lots of young families and I like seeing the hand crafted decorations that the family have made as a craft exercise. Who are the people who make their own, and who obviously spends way too much money on that stuff? Which children take only a small portion of treats, making sure thereâs plenty left for other children, and who grabs repeated handfuls of treats or even pours the entire treat bowl into their goody bag! Which parents dress up and get out there mingling with others in the pleasant early evening, laughing and handing out treats? Which parents put a bowl out and play possum? Which parents deliberately ignore the blatant greed of their children and fiddle with their phone, or actively encourage their children to take all the treats! It is endlessly fascinating for me to observe and I am totally there for it.

I loved it back in Canada, cause it was the norm. Streets were full of kids and adults. 90% of houses were decorated and people got into the spirit of it.
Here it seems to forced and unnatural. Which is why we hand out caramel covered onions to all the trick or treaters.

Letâs not forget the whole âIâll post my address online so I can lure your children in for the promise of a candy barâ. Yikes.

My go to is little packets of wasabi peas. Perfectly wholesome - even healthy. Donât often see the same faces twice though. Heh heh.
