On the one hand, yes, it’s different people. That said, this particular movie made the choice to specifically hide the damage to victims and solely focus on the emotions of the man who enabled the tragedy. I’m all for stories of people trying to redeem themselves, but deliberately ignoring the victims was a bad choice, imo.
Comment on Surpreisenheimer
yakko@feddit.uk 3 weeks agoPretty sure different people made the film. What, are they supposed to be proud so it’s more fun to hate them?

One gripe I have with the film is that none of it focuses on the poor, mostly Hispanic, population that lived in New Mexico at the time. These people had their land taken from them (their sole source of generational wealth) and died of horrific cancers post-tests. I think most of history just pretends nobody lived out there.
Here’s just one article about it

Really?
…Shit, I guess I need to actually see this film before I talk about it. I assumed it was mere Oscar-bait and just absorbed information about it osmotically. I wasn’t even mad at them, just thought oh, they found a guy who looks exactly like David Byrne, of course they wanted him for their Oscar bait film.
Those are not the choices I would have made if I was telling a story about the guy who built the bomb. I would have probably drawn a lot more from sources like Barefoot Gen, myself.

You may ask yourself Why the big bomb?

They’re not supposed to melt the civilians.

Pretty sure Christopher Nolan did not, in fact, melt any civilians.

He got lazy and used CGI. Directors these days, no sense of what makes a good movie.

Kubrick would have melted some actors.

You’re conflating the people who did that and the people who made a movie, if you want to throw a “nukes are a war crime” party I’m already on the guest list, but your comment reads like you’re talking shit about people who don’t like nukes and didn’t nuke anybody, are you confused about that?

Yes. Americans. I’m sorry you’re having difficulty with this.
TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
yes, because .ml folks basically live in a alt universe where america is evil and the USSR was good.
When Stalin mass murders his own people, it’s for the Greater Good.

I think the film would have been much “better” if we showed the horror and devistation that we caused. American media purposefully hides the death and destruction that we do, and paints ourselves as the good guys.
yakko@feddit.uk 2 weeks ago
I really agree. For genuinely talking about the senseless horror of those bombings, especially the callous afterthought that was Nagasaki, I prefer Dan Carlin’s podcast series.

Grave of the Fireflies should be on every American school’s curriculum.

Unfortunately, it’s like impossible to find on modern media. I was able to find a torrent, but I haven’t been able to bring myself to watching it yet. I think it’s the only Ghibli film that I haven’t seen yet.
