People with no respect for the agency of others scare the shit out of me, as funny as this idiot is. It scares me to think about how many there are just like him.

Exactly. It’s Lemmy. I’ve had unpopular takes, I’ve had shit takes and hot takes… I take them all in stride. Let the downvotes hit, it’s fine.
What I didn’t do is go “ohyea you don’t agree with me? I’ll show you!!” and then try to censor their voices by using whatever power I had.

and that also feel like “you guys just don’t get it, I’m right, so I don’t have to think about your agency!”

Bingo. I’ve been banned from a few communities because God forbid I have an opinion that doesn’t align with the mods. You think I care? No. Because I control what I can and accept what I can’t.

Yup. Also, this shit isn’t Facebook. You can have as many accounts as you want and get banned in all kinds of new and creative ways!

I feel like down votes/up votes aren’t, or weren’t, supposed to be the focus here. Heck, on Voyager, I hide the vote numbers. Why are fake Internet points so important to people??
But yeah, dude didn’t even consider that maybe it’s them that fucked up. Just doubled down and noped out to preserve their ego.

The votes represent, in some sense, a social consensus, and consensus actually does matter quite a lot to people.
If you ever see people arguing about which movie is objectively better than some other, that’s what they’re doing. They’re fighting for social capital.

Seeing the social consensus can be legitimately useful in many situations outside subjective opinion though. YouTube dislikes are the classic example. They were a very reliable way to know when a tutorial was not worth your time.

Oh yeah, I don’t hide them. Votes even on reddit can be a useful temperature check for audience engagement.
I do think it’s funny when people whine about getting downvotes, though; it betrays just a little bit of discomfort with whatever else they’re saying.
