This is why Iâm partially grateful for my perma ban đ so far it seems less explosive arguments on here and just slower so less opportunities to get into those kinds of time wasting, frustrating reddit back and forths.

Why canât I stop myself from arguing with really dumb people on Reddit? I think my brain just refuses to accept they can really be as stupid as they seem so keep poking trying to figure out whatâs really going on. But after a while I start to think that Iâm going completely crazy and 2+2 doesnât equal 4 like I think it does. Itâs always a relief when someone else weighs in on my side and shores up my own world view a little.

we have a tendency to think that facts in themselves are persuasive, they arenât
or that if you show the logic they will be convinced, they wonât
Conservatives know that people donât think and just accept what they are told if you have their trust or respect and if you tell them itâs for a good cause. Maybe give a supporting fact, which may or may not true.
The belief that people can be convinced by facts and logic is the greatest failing in all moderate left leaning political parties and is a belief that is ironically not supported by reality.

I guess my persistant belief that facts and logic can persuade people is a case in point - no matter how often I am shown it doesnât actually work the belief persists!
Seagoon_@aussie.zone â¨6⊠â¨days⊠ago
I think the belief comes from respect, you respect the agency of others, you would never tell them lies or try to persuade using emotion
that is not how humans are made, we are foremost social animals , so if you want to change minds you must first gain trust
lifeinlarkhall@lemmy.world â¨6⊠â¨days⊠ago
Damn thatâs a really interesting point actually. I tend to be fact, logic and emotionally driven lol and I really struggle to understand when people arenât grasping the facts of a matter. I know sometimes I can get emotional so sometimes I will take all the emotion out of my stance and focus on the logic and facts - thinking that will be more understood than injecting emotions into the argument but it still doesnât work.
Disclosure; Iâm autistic so I honestly just thought this was me not being able to communicate, which maybe it sort of is, but it also seems like a flaw to not be able to accept facts as facts and to see logic? I also think online is a terrible measurement of effective communication though.
SoâŚhow do you be persuasive? The only answers I can think of by what I observe are all very cynical but possibly accurate? That it basically has to be painted as something that directly benefits the person you are trying to convince? How else can you effectively persuade someone? Genuine questions here đ

Nah, a lot of people are more stupid than you think.
Thereâs also bots and trolls too.
After a few comments I just stop replying or write something along the lines of âokay champ, whatever you sayâ
Seagoon_@aussie.zone â¨6⊠â¨days⊠ago
same
especially when they arenât making any effort at all
MeanElevator@aussie.zone â¨6⊠â¨days⊠ago
Or misinterpret something and go off that. Feels like Iâm playing catch up trying to steer them back.
Lifeâs too short to deal with fools like that
StudChud@aussie.zone â¨6⊠â¨days⊠ago
Well at least you donât believe that 1x1 = 2 đ
RustyRaven@aussie.zone â¨6⊠â¨days⊠ago
The person Iâm arguing with probably does. They definitely seem to believe that if A=1 it canât be true that B=1.
I think thatâs whatâs probably keeping me in the argument at this point, itâs such an obvious logical failure it feels like even a really stupid person could see it if I can just dumb it down enough.
Thornburywitch@aussie.zone â¨6⊠â¨days⊠ago
Thatâs a typo not a belief system I reckon.
MeanElevator@aussie.zone â¨6⊠â¨days⊠ago
Definitely a belief system. Terrance Howard (actor) went off the rails not that long ago, and invented his own math system.
People are crazy weird
