myotheraccount@lemmy.world 3 weeks agoIt was, because tobacco was very expensive in europe (being a colonial good), and cannabis was widely available (as a byproduct of the fabric and rope industry). Once smoking became fashionable, people looked for ways to smoke even if they couldn’t afford tobacco. Cannabis was a popular replacement.
