Bro I’d rather the authenticity of how the older games look rather than sloppifying its characters’ faces.
Comment on Nvidia Announces DLSS 5, and it adds... An AI slop filter over your game
Epp@lemmus.org 3 weeks ago
An ocean of hate in this thread… I’m excited for this tech, and hope there’s a way to inject it into classics that haven’t aged so well because they aimed for realism at a time when it was unachievable. Now we can actually see how those games might have looked had they been fully successful.
Off the top of my head, I think this would be great in most Elder Scrolls games, most notably Daggerfall. Almost anything released for N64, with it’s extremely flat textures, or PSX with it’s heavily pixelated textures. Maybe GoldenEye you’ll actually be able to make out other characters from further than 20’ or Final Fantasy IX won’t look like 3D blobs hovering over static, pre-rendered scenes.
I’m excited to replay so many games without feeling let down by my nostalgia filter when actually seeing them again!
Now let the waves of down-votes roll over me like I’m at the beach, for having the audacity of disagreeing with the irrational and incensed mob.

Good! Everyone should be able to make that choice, but it’s only a choice when an option is offered - which is what this technology accomplishes.

God, this is such an unbelievably anti-art thing to say.

You. are. mentally. ill.
I’m not just saying that to be mean. I’ve been reading a lot of Umineko recently, and there’s such a beautiful way of putting this: old games look perfectly fine, “but without ‘love’ it can’t be ‘seen’.” You have no love. This is why you are blind.
Epp@lemmus.org 3 weeks ago
I’d counter that people who think others must think as they do are mentally ill.
“You can’t appreciate that! It offends me, and therefore must be banned. NO ONE can enjoy it. All must think as I do.”
That’s what the people in this thread sound like to me.
petrol_sniff_king@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
Right, it’s all 1984.
The entire point of art, of human sociality, is to lend your heart out, and be lent one’s heart in turn.
You describing this technology as ‘fixing’ old works you can’t stand anymore is the same as rejecting the heart being held out in front of you.
If you want to use the old works to create something new, that’s perfectly fine, but they do not need fixing. You can’t see this because you do not have love.
Epp@lemmus.org 3 weeks ago
“Point” is a matter of opinion. That may be the point to you, or to an artist, but it’s not universal. The point, to others, may be novelty of experience.

New account 100% nivida shill bot
Epp@lemmus.org 3 weeks ago
Thanks for the heads up, I’ve marked you as such.
Why did you have to make a new account to shill, though? I’d think you’d want you use an existing one if you had it.

Have you considered what you’re looking at and what it means? Because the work of a human artist has meaning even if the technology is old. Hallucinations of a machine have no meaning. If there is no meaning the act of consuming the media will hollow you out instead of filling you up.
Epp@lemmus.org 3 weeks ago
Nothing inherently has meaning, except that which the beholder imparts to it. By your same logic, you’re dismissing the work of the creators of this technology. There’s room for both to exist - options are good! No one is forcing people to play a certain way, but I get the impression many here wish their own preference was enforced on everyone.

Absolutely.
I am also anti cigarettes, anti gambling, and anti toxic river dumping, if you wanted to know.

Think again. You are falling for the circlejerk slop in this thread and think this is actually generative AI.
DLSS 5 basically works best with high-resolution ray traced render stills because it works on a frame by frame basis. It doesn’t modify shape or geometry, it achieves that much by just manipulating the lighting and materials that are applied. If you actually compare screenshots side by side, you’ll find they include all of the same elements.
With Daggerfall, it wouldn’t really work out, insert pixelated mess, get pixelated mess, although it might be interesting to see.
Epp@lemmus.org 3 weeks ago
I do understand that. It doesn’t deter me. Interesting is all that it needs to be. Doesn’t even have to be subjectively better. Just different, to relive classics in a new perspective.

As much as we all loved GoldenEye 007 and Slappers Only multiplayer, due to licensing, I highly doubt we will ever see it be remade. gardinerbryant.com/goldeneye-007-the-accidental-m…
Epp@lemmus.org 3 weeks ago
Exactly, so if we want to see what it could look like if it were remade, this technology would be the only really option. It’s certainly more likely than an army of volunteers dodging C&D orders while donating their free time to construct a fan remake.

Ff9 looks amazing compared to ff7.
Ff8 is somewhere in-between.
Epp@lemmus.org 3 weeks ago
I agree… But they could look better. I’d like to see how that would look, even if it offends an artist to know it isn’t the exact image they originally created decades ago.
fallaciousBasis@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
My favorite mod for ff7 was when they took the battle figures and used them on the over world. That game had awful geometry.
Ff8 was better. IMO ff9 looked fantastic (for the era.)
Epp@lemmus.org 3 weeks ago
Agreed on all points. I just personally see this as one more mod that would be fun to see how it interpreted those graphics of yesteryear.

Spend a decade getting an advanced degree in a technology that genuinely excites you, ignites your passion, and then turns out to be universally reviled. You’ll catch up quick.
o1011o@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Listen, AI is great when it’s folding proteins or looking for novel solutions to math problems, doing work that can be checked by human minds to make sure the logic of the AI and the logic of the problem are in accordance. It’s universally reviled when it replaces art with garbage. Art is meant to enrich human experience, to help us understand, to help us grow, to be an authentic expression of our inner world. AI has no inner world. It has no experience and no understanding. Perhaps there’s something to the arguments of those who hate it?
Perhaps in this world where so much of real value has already been taken from us we reject this most recent attempt to take away the thing that satisfies one of our most basic needs?
Epp@lemmus.org 3 weeks ago
I sincerely think you hit the nail on the head. The overreaction isn’t fully attributable to the efforts to offer an alternative graphical approach to games, but pent up anger at systemic issues that minimize individuals. It’s just sad to see, especially as someone who appreciates having options. No one is forced to use DLSS, of any variant, but the way people react you’d think it was going to be hard-coded as enabled in every future game, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. It’s just frustrating.
WolfLink@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
Use AI to do cool stuff instead of trying to automate the soul out of artwork.
I also work in tech btw.
Epp@lemmus.org 3 weeks ago
Cool is subjective, though. I personally think it’s cool to offer options to change and reimagine art. Let personal preference dictate whether someone enables it, or not. Hate isn’t necessary, but it’s in abundance.
