It was BEDMAS for us, where the E was exponents or something.
Comment on I dunno

Was anyone else ever taught it as BOMDAS as opposed to BODMAS?

Found the Canadian
Nope, it’s the same in Australia and the U.K.

I don’t think so, and I’ve seen Maths textbooks form all over the world. Only the U.S. wants to reverse the order of DM from everyone else’s acronym. 🙄
Alaknar@sopuli.xyz 3 weeks ago
There’s no difference.
Addition and subtraction are the same operation, multiplication and division are the same operations.
So:
BO(MD)(AS) == BO(DM)(AS)
SmartmanApps@programming.dev 1 week ago
multiplication and division are the same operation
No they’re not, but they are both binary operators.
in order to stop confusing people, it should just be: BOMA.
Leaving out D and S confuses people about where to do them in the order. It’s intended to be used as a checklist

You already said that to me
And you’re still ignoring it
princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 weeks ago
Yeah, I was taught BOMDAS here in Australia.
SmartmanApps@programming.dev 1 week ago
BODMAS (or BEDMAS), not BOMDAS. (unless they did that in some random state). I’m an Australian Maths teacher
princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 days ago
Or it was some random teacher. Or it was more than fifteen years ago. I dunno, it was just what I was taught.

I was taught only Brackets Division Subtraction Multiplication at the local dungeon.
essell@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Its BOSMAS for maths and BOMDAS for twerking.
Easy mistake to make given the amount of maths involved in dancing.
Jayve@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
PEMDAS, is that the same as BOMDAS?
SmartmanApps@programming.dev 1 week ago
They’re all just different mnemonics for the same rules.
Nindelofocho@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
BOMDAS deez nuts or something
marcos@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Why do people put bot pairs of multiplication and division, and addition and subtraction on the acronym?
Do you really follow that order with the associative operations?
SmartmanApps@programming.dev 1 week ago
Because it’s intended to be used as a checklist
Yep
dreadbeef@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 weeks ago
do you think i know what an associative operation is?
Tithen@anarchist.nexus 3 weeks ago
I think so. Amazing how many different ways there are to say it
Notyou@sopuli.xyz 3 weeks ago
So instead of Parentheses, Exponents is it Box and O that digit in the sky?
merc@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
Brackets and Orders, not that anybody calls “(” a bracket or “^” an “order”.
