counter-counterpoint - .ml costs ~€30/month to run, most of the money you donate doesn’t fund it.
Funding lemmy helps every other instance much more than it helps .ml.hakase@lemm.ee 3 days ago
It’s not just the server costs - it also compensates the devs for all of the valuable time they spend censoring people on .ml too!

There is no paid moderation work on lemmy.ml, its all volunteer based.

He does it for free

I do not care to donate to .ml, that’s all. There are many reasons for that, quite a few are in the comment and post I linked to.

The kiwifarm transplants aren’t exactly helping Lemmy either. Some people decided the Lemmy devs are something to lolcow and have been at it nonstop for two years.
The politics aren’t even restricted to the devs or their instances, anyway.

That comment contradicts what I linked to. And the first reply to that comment (by someone else) links to the same comment I did.
Either donations are separate, or they are not.
Which is true? Nutomic was tagged in the post, last I saw they had not replied.

This is like telling people to not donate to Wikipedia because you don’t like Wikileaks.

It’s really not even remotely anything like that

That’s fair. I have a generally positive opinion of the devs even if I disagree with some of their views. Moderating is not easy, and especially not when you get into heated political territory - that’s why personally I “cheat” a bit by dissuading politics within this instance ;) A small select list of mod actions is not something that sways my opinion. It is tricky to process some reports and sometimes we can make bad calls.
But it is true that this context will affect someone else’s opinion differently, so it is good for others to be aware of some of this context before deciding to donate.

Don’t get me wrong I really like Lemmy.
I have no love for Tankies though. It’s a difficult position.

i still think lemmy will see more adoption if there comes a hard fork. or, really. piefed and mbin might supplant lemmy as being the backbone of the threadiverse as their development continues.
the other possibility is for neutomic and dessalines to step down as maintainers and hand the project to someone else. i see this as unlikely though as they give the impression that their authoritarian communist politics is the entire point of working on lemmy for them.
i guess we’ll wait and see, but for now there’s no way i could see myself donating money to neutomic and dessalines even if my admin took their software and created something good with it. they are simply too vile and dangerous. the threadiverse is the future of reddit-like discussionboards, but i can’t bring myself to view lemmy as the future of the threadiverse

There is no one else with the skill or interest to take over Lemmy development. I also wonder how you got the impression that “authoritarian communist politics” are my reason to work on Lemmy and give it away for free to everyone.
