- Comment on When leftists say "landlord are parasites" or similar dislike of landlords, do they also mean the people that own like a couple of houses as an investment, or only the big landlords? 1 week ago:
Depends on the leftist, but generally I think hoarding land you’re not personally using, especially during a housing crisis, is wrong.
I also think that charging rent from people to simply exist in a place you aren’t using anyway is wrong. When she pays the mortgage she’s buying equity, when they pay the rent they’re buying jack shit. It’s an enormous parasitic drain on the economy.
But I don’t think she’s, like, evil. Not the same way that major landlord companies are. And I understand the motivations. I still disagree with the methods, but until the great commie revolution/rapture comes we all have to engage with problematic capitalist systems to a greater or lesser extent.
- Comment on If billionaires and CEOs feel like they need to start paying for large security details, would that be an example of trickle down economics? 1 week ago:
Instead of fishing for a debate how about you just go ahead and say whatever it is you’re thinking

- Comment on Why do Americans always presume that everyone speaks English 2 weeks ago:
- because they’re frequently proven right, English is the most commonly spoken second language after all
- Americans who can afford to travel abroad are generally more wealthy, and tend to be more over entitled in all aspects of their lives
- Comment on Intel Arc B580 'Battlemage' GPU announced - 1440p Ultra gaming for $249 2 weeks ago:
Been a while but I played around with the a770 in Arch for a few months. It didn’t play nice with proton and even native games were hit and miss. Better support from Intel than nvidia gives, but it’s a new platform and Linux development was definitely taking a back seat to the windows drivers which were also a buggy mess.
And basically nobody had the cards so if something didn’t work your options were to give up or become a computer graphics programming wizard and fix it all yourself from scratch.
To answer the question: not really, no. The drivers themselves may have been fine, but who knows how any given software will handle a brand new GPU architecture.

Sick. I got an a770le when they launched. Buggy AF, but not bad performance when it decided to work. It currently lives as a dedicated av1 encoder in a Plex server

- Comment on So this is how my neighbor fixes his fence. 3 weeks ago:
The photo was most likely taken from the outside of the fence, as evidenced by the smaller picket fence in the foreground
- Comment on So this is how my neighbor fixes his fence. 4 weeks ago:
Presumably the fence runs between their property so they have to see it every day. Also those exposed nails could be hazardous to pets or children.
It’s also pretty trivial to cut the boards to length and use appropriate fasteners. Maybe I’m reading too much into this, but I suspect this kind of carelessness is present in other parts of the neighbor’s life. They’ve probably gotten on OP’s nerves before.

- Comment on If a leftist ran for president, would liberals support him? 4 weeks ago:
I’m not sure how much these endorsements actually matter… Lord knows Liz Cheney’s endorsing Kamala didn’t tip the scales.
Would establishment libs support a leftist? Maybe not. But that doesn’t mean that voters would necessarily follow suit.
- Comment on If a leftist ran for president, would liberals support him? 4 weeks ago:
Probably. People tend to vote for their team - regardless of the actual underlying policy
No promises, though.

- Comment on USA President term limits 5 weeks ago:
Short of congress changing the law or a successful coup, neither of which are necessarily off the table, yes these next four years will be Trump’s last in office. Who knows what either party will have to offer in 2028.

Yeah, the double pack of Kirkland ibuprofen will typically last an entire family a year or more
- Comment on Het Pijnstillersparadijs: Europese Zelfbeheersing vs. Amerikaanse Pillenfeest 5 weeks ago:
It helps marginally better than placebo for me. Hence why Americans use it for fairly trivial aches and pains.
I can’t imagine it would do anything for pain I’d consider ‘serious’.

This decision is made for most people by the electrician who wired the house. This seems like as decent a hypothesis as any for why they seem to prefer washers to the left

- Comment on Will COVID death rates of Republicans have a significant impact on the outcome of the presidential election? 1 month ago:
Yikes. We’re all thinking about how covid disproportionately affects the elderly, but it also disproportionately affects people who live in denser population centers.
I don’t like talking about pandemics in terms of which political party they help, but I guess the dems may have been hit harder in the end…
- Comment on I'd have to hear her argument, but... 2 months ago:
If it’s all a truly random selection, which I believe it was, then half of all people would cease to exist, leaving half of their gut biomes behind, still alive (albeit briefly). I guess the end result would be the snapped people leaving behind a mist of gross intestinal bacteria which would itself mostly die out without a host. Meaning much more than half of all gut biome bacteria would be killed as a result.
Of course it would make more sense to consider a person and their gut flora as one being, but the joke is about how stupid the initial conception of Thanos’ plan is, not creating an academically rigorous argument.
- Comment on Is Lemmy an effective alternative to Reddit? 2 months ago:
For conversation about various subjects with broad appeal and a left wing slant, sure.
For tech support or info on niche topics, not at all. Lemmy is not big enough, old enough, or easily indexed by search engines.
The porn is also pretty mid tbh
- Comment on Why do some men dis other men who sit to pee? (& follow-up questions) 2 months ago:
You’re not going to hear from men who actually do this because they don’t have a good reason and aren’t typically comfortable with the kind of introspection the question demands.
Some people are exclusionary pricks who look for excuses to judge others. They don’t have or need a reason. It’s bullying.

I think we’re all just kinda passively expecting it at this point. I’m pretty dispassionate about the whole thing.
Games are art, you have to be willing to take a risk and try something genuinely new every once in a while. Ubisoft isn’t.

- Comment on What does "blackpilled" mean? 2 months ago:
Yeah, it’s a pretty deep pit of depression. I suspect most people who consider themselves blackpilled are clinically depressed. Not at all useful. But then again, neither is being judgmental of them.
